Stanisław Witkowski CBE (Hon.) (23 April 1883 – 28 August 1957), was an officer, engineer and military industry organiser in the Polish Army, Hononary Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Background and early life As a secondary school student Stanisław Witkowski was a member of " Association of the Polish Youth "Zet"/"Zarzewie", clandestine organisations fighting for the independence of Poland. In 1912 he studied at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Lwów (Lviv) Polytechnic. There he joined the ranks of the Polish Rifle Squads (organised by Zarzewie), serving in the 1st Academic Company. Following the outbreak of the First World War he volunteered for the Polish Legions, fighting with distinction in the 1st Artillery Regiment. After the so-called "oath crisis" the Polish Legions were disbanded and the legionnaires, including Stanisław Witkowski, were interned by the Germans in the camps of Szczypiorno and Łomża. Michał Witkowski (born 17 January 1975, in Wrocław, Poland) is a Polish novelist. Life and career His first "official" work, ''Copyright'', published in 2001, was a collection of short stories. However, he had previously published, ''Zgorszeni wstają od stołów'' in 1997 as Michał S. Witkowski, with the S. standing for Sebastian. On December 17, 2004, ''Lubiewo'' was published — a radically queer novel that sold an estimated 15,000 copies. The novel has been translated into German, English (''Lovetown''), Spanish, Dutch, Finnish (2007), French, Russian, Czech, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Slovenian (2010) and Hungarian (2010). Biography Born the son of a Jewish merchant in Berlin he attended the '' Französisches Gymnasium'' until he began to train as an actor and joined a traveling theatre troupe. In 1878 Harden converted to Protestantism and started his journalistic career as a theatre critic in 1884. He also published political essays under the pseudonym ''Apostata'' in several liberal newspapers like the ''Berliner Tageblatt'' edited by Rudolf Mosse.
