Witte van Haemstede (–1321) was a bastard son of Floris V, Count of Holland, famous for military prowess. Family Witte's half-brother John I, Count of Holland, gave him the property connected to Haamstede Castle, in Zeeland. Battle at the Manpad In 1304 Witte led an army to victory in a battle against the Flemish, who were threatening the city of Haarlem. He is said to have defeated the Flemish near Heemstede with the help of the Haarlemmers at the site of the ''Manpad''. In 1817 Mr. David Jacob van Lennep, who lived in the stately house called Huis te Manpad next to the Manpad, encouraged the Heemstede council to erect a monument. In 1959 he postulated that Schiller's "Ode to Joy" was specifically rewritten in 1803 following influence on Schiller by the works of Robert Burns. Life He was born in Bratislava in Slovakia (then known as Pressburg) on 18 February 1907, the son of William G. J. Witte. His family travelled widely, and he was educated in Poland and Austria and then attended the University of Munich in Germany. After a year at the University of Berlin he ended in Breslau University (then in Germany, now Wrocław in Poland) where he gained a doctorate in economics in 1930. Otto Witte (October 16, 1872 – August 13, 1958) was a German circus acrobat and fantasist who said that he managed to be crowned King of Albania. In 1913, when Albania broke away from the Ottoman Empire, some Albanian Muslims invited Halim Eddine, a nephew of the Sultan, to come and be crowned king. Noticing his own resemblance to Halim Eddine, Witte said, he traveled to Durrës with a friend, the sword-swallower Max Schlepsig. He claimed that he had succeeded in being crowned king by the local troops on 13 August 1913. He also claimed that, over the next five days, he enjoyed a harem and declared war on Montenegro before his ruse was discovered. Luke Witte (born October 19, 1950) is a retired American college and professional basketball player who is now a church minister. He played at the collegiate level for Ohio State University and professionally for the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was during his time at Ohio State that he was severely injured in one of the more brutal on-court brawls in basketball history. High school and college Witte was a standout player at Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio, where he scored over 1500 points during his career. He went on to the Ohio State University, where, as a sophomore, in 1971 led the team in rebounds (331 for the season) and was all-Big Ten.
