Alice Withrow
Alice Victoria Phillips Withrow (September 5, 1907 – April 28, 1998) was an American botanist, plant physiologist and researcher of plant photochemistry. Her focus of study was "the effect of light on the flowering and reproduction of plants" and along with her husband she developed a pioneering method of hydroponics. Biography Withrow was born on September 5, in Louisville, Kentucky to Roscoe M. and Ollie (Snawder) Phillips. She attended Butler University (B.A. degree, botany, 1929) and University of Cincinnati (M.A. degree, 1931), where her master's thesis "Life forms and leaf size classes of certain plant communities of the Cincinnati region" was overseen by Emma Lucy Braun and published 1932 in the journal '' Ecology''. In 1931, she married Robert Bruce Withrow. William Henry Withrow
William Henry Withrow (August 6, 1839 – November 12, 1908) was a Canadian Methodist minister, journalist, and author. Born in Toronto, Upper Canada, Withrow received his education at Toronto Academy, Victoria College, Cobourg, and University of Toronto, graduating from the latter with the degree of B.A. in 1863. Previous to entering college, he spent three years in the office of architect William Hay of Toronto. He was ordained at Hamilton in 1864, and served the church at Waterford, Montreal, Hamilton, Toronto, Niagara, and Hamilton a second time. He was originally connected with the New Connexion Methodist body, but joined the Wesleyan Conference in 1867, and was an ardent advocate of union. In 1874 he became editor of the ''Canadian Methodist Magazine'' and Sunday School periodicals, retaining that role until 1906. The Withrow Moraine and Jameson Lake Drumlin Field is a National Park Service–designated privately owned National Natural Landmark located in Douglas County, Washington state, United States. Withrow Moraine is the only Ice Age terminal moraine on the Waterville Plateau section of the Columbia Plateau. The drumlin field includes excellent examples of glacially-formed elongated hills. Withrow, Withrow lies at the base of the Withrow Moraine and Jameson Lake Drumlin Field is a National Park Service designated privately owned National Natural Landmark located in Douglas County, Washington state, United States. Withrow Moraine is the only Ice age, Ice Age terminal moraine on the Waterville Plateau section of the Columbia Plateau. Withrow, Minnesota
Withrow is an unincorporated community located in the city of Grant, Washington County, Minnesota, United States. Formerly an unincorporated village on the edge of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area, Withrow was located in three different local government jurisdictions: May Township, Grant Township, and Oneka Township. The village had a post office and general store in May Township and a railroad station in Oneka. Withrow is located northeast of White Bear Lake and northwest of Stillwater. Withrow was established when the Minneapolis and St. Croix Railroad, which later merged with the Soo Line Railroad, was extended through Washington County in 1883. The village was named after Thomas Joshua Withrow, a farmer from Nova Scotia who had settled in the area in 1874. The well-drained, sandy soils around Withrow made it ideal for growing potatoes. Withrow Park
Withrow Park is a park in the Riverdale neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Laid out and constructed in the 1910s, at the same time that the surrounding community was built, Withrow Park is among Toronto's large multi-purpose parks. The park is bounded by Carlaw Avenue on the east, Bain Avenue on the south, Logan Avenue on the west and McConnell Avenue on the north. Withrow Park is named after John Jacob Withrow (1833–1900), a local landowner and builder, who also served as a city alderman and was one of the founders of what would become the Canadian National Exhibition. The park gained nationwide notoriety in 2004 when hot dogs laced with carbofuran were left in the park, killing one dog and poisoning 15 others. While the poisonings were under criminal investigation, the City closed most of Withrow Park by surrounding it with a chain-link fence, causing controversy in the neighbourhood. Mary Ellen Hinamon Withrow (born October 2, 1930) is an American activist and former politician who served as the 40th Treasurer of the United States from March 1, 1994 to January 20, 2001 under President Bill Clinton. She also was Treasurer when the $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 notes were redesigned in the 1990s. Biography A native of Marion County, Ohio, Withrow served as the treasurer of her home state of Ohio, a position to which she was elected in 1982, 1986, and 1990. John Jacob Withrow
John Jacob Withrow (1833 – August 5, 1900) was a Toronto businessman and politician. He proposed the first edition of the Canadian National Exhibition and organised the annual event for several years. Withrow was born in York, Upper Canada, and opened a construction business. In 1873, he was elected as alderman for the Toronto City Council. He tried to convince the Provincial Fair Association to permanently establish their annual fair in Toronto. When they refused, he established an annual fair in Toronto, which later became the Canadian National Exhibition. He twice ran, unsuccessfully, to become mayor of Toronto. After leaving city council, he sat on the board of various businesses and philanthropic organisations. He declared bankruptcy after losing his investments in a depression in the 1890s.
