Laurie McInnes
Laurie McInnes is an Australian writer, director, and cinematographer known for art films like ''Broken Highway'' and ''Dogwatch''. Her work has been compared to Jim Jarmusch's. McInnes has said that she grew up a lonely child who was bad at school, and she channeled those early feelings (the "ghosts" of her childhood) into her debut feature, ''Broken Highway''. Although her last effort as a director was with 1999's ''Dogwatch'', she's continued to be active in the Australian film industry, working as a second-unit director and cinematographer for films like ''Look Both Ways (2005 film), Look Both Ways'' and ''Night (2008 film), Night''. Awards ''Broken Highway''—McInnes' breakthrough film—was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, Cannes in 1993, but it lost to Jane Campion's ''The Piano''. ''Filmnews'' was a monthly newspaper that covered independent film production, distribution and exhibition in Australia and the federal and state government policies and practices that supported them. Produced in Sydney, it was distributed around Australia, containing news, reviews, interviews, articles and some gossip on the local film community. It ran from February 1975, from government startup grants over 1973–74, to 1995. History ''Filmnews'' first issue appeared in February 1975. Published in St Peters' Lane, Darlinghurst, Filmnews began as a newsletter with screening and meeting information and catalogue of the Sydney Filmmakers Co-op. In August 1975 filmmaker Aggy Read complained that it was "flabby and indulgent with very little meaningful news/info/dialogue", which galvanised the newspaper into transforming into a legitimate newspaper for the filmmaker/worker community. The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is an annual film festival held over three weeks in Melbourne, Australia. It was founded in 1952 and is one of the oldest film festivals in the world following the founding of the Venice Film Festival in 1932, Cannes Film Festival in 1939 and Berlin Film Festival in 1951. Originally launched at Olinda outside Melbourne in 1952 as the Olinda Film Festival, in 1953, the event was renamed the Melbourne Film Festival. It held this title over many decades before transforming in the Melbourne International Film Festival.
