With a City (April 25, 2003 – April 23, 2006) was a thoroughbred horse. As a foal of 2003, he was a possible contender for the Triple Crown in 2006. However, With a City contracted a mysterious illness at Trackside Louisville on Thursday April 20, 2006. He was euthanized by lethal injection on Sunday, April 23, 2006 after his condition rapidly deteriorated. Connections With a City was owned by Equirace.com., and trained by Michael Maker. With Approval
With Approval (May 9, 1986 – June 21, 2010) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the Canadian Triple Crown in 1989 under jockey Don Seymour. Even though he missed the rest of his three-year-old season due to injury, he was named the 1989 Canadian Horse of the Year. At four, With Approval set a new world record of 2:10.26 for miles on turf while winning the Bowling Green Handicap. He also finished second in the 1990 Breeders' Cup Turf and the Arlington Million. In 1993, With Approval was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Background With Approval raced as a homebred for Donald G. Willmot's Kinghaven Farms. Arkansas Derby
The Arkansas Derby is an American flat Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds held annually in April at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. It is currently a Grade I race run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs) on dirt. In 2004, to celebrate its 100th anniversary, Oaklawn Park offered a $5 million bonus to any horse that could sweep its three-year-old graded stakes, the Rebel Stakes and the Arkansas Derby, and then take the Kentucky Derby. Smarty Jones's collected the bonus. The exposure from Smarty Jones subsequent run at the Triple Crown helped increase participation from the top three-year-olds in the country to the point where the American Graded Stakes Committee made the Arkansas Derby a Grade I race in 2010. The John Battaglia Memorial Stakes is a race for thoroughbred horses held in early March at Turfway Park. The race is open to three-year-olds willing to race one and one-sixteenth miles on the Tapeta surface. The race is an ungraded stakes with a current purse of $75,000. Begun in 1982, the race is a prep to the Jeff Ruby Steaks. John Battaglia was the former general manager of the old Latonia Race Track (now Turfway). He also was the general manager of Miles Park (race track) in Louisville, Kentucky. Turfway Park
Turfway Park is an American horse racing track located within the city limits of Florence, Kentucky, about south of the Ohio River at Cincinnati. The track conducts live Thoroughbred horse racing during two meets each year—Holiday (December), and Winter/Spring (January to late March/early April)—and offers year-round simulcast wagering from tracks across the continent.
