In folklore, the witching hour or devil's hour is a time of night that is associated with supernatural events, whereby witches, demons and ghosts are thought to appear and be at their most powerful. Definitions vary, and include the hour immediately after midnight, and the time between 3:00am and 4:00am. The term now has a widespread colloquial and idiomatic usage that is associated with human physiology and behaviour to more superstitious phenomena such as luck. Origins The phrase "witching hour" began at least as early as 1775, in the poem "Night, an Ode." by Rev. Helen Arnold
Helen Louise Prettyman Arnold (August 17, 1890 – February 19, 1976) was a silent film actress who appeared in motion pictures from 1916 to 1918. Early life and career Helen Louise Prettyman was born on August 17, 1890 to Thomas Jefferson Prettyman (1856–1935) and Mary A. Graves (1858–1940). She had three siblings, Mabel (1884–1920), Lewis Alfred (1886–1961), and Thomas Jefferson Jr. (1888–1967). Helen married Richard M. Arnold Jr. on April 2, 1910 in Clark, Indiana. Arnold was a member of the cast of the 1891 production of "Nerves" at the Lyceum Theatre in New York City. The play ran from January 19, 1891 to April 1891. Arnold played Viola Campbell in a 1916 production of ''The Witching Hour'' filmed in Flushing, New York. The film starred C. Aubrey Smith and Marie Shotwell. ''The Witching Hour'' was an American comic book horror anthology published by DC Comics from 1969 to 1978. Publication history The series was published for 85 issues from February–March 1969 to October 1978. Its tagline was "It's 12 o'clock... ''The Witching Hour'' is a 1934 American pre-Code drama film directed by Henry Hathaway and starring Sir Guy Standing, John Halliday, Judith Allen and Tom Brown. Plot While Jack Brookfield ( John Halliday) runs a gambling gathering at nighttime in his Kentucky house, his daughter Nancy ( Judith Allen) is frequently visited by and becomes engaged to young Northern architect Clay Thorne (Tom Brown).
