Wisconsin Northern Railroad
The Wisconsin Northern Railroad is the trade name employed by Progressive Rail to operate of railroad in northern Wisconsin and began operations on November 29, 2004. Trackage The railroad operates on trackage leased from the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and Wisconsin Central Limited (WC). The UP trackage extends north from Norma, a junction with the UP in northern Chippewa Falls, to Cameron. It was completed by the Chippewa Falls and Northern Railway, a predecessor of the Chicago and North Western Railway, in 1883. At Cameron, the Wisconsin Northern splits, with WC trackage continuing north to Rice Lake and west to Almena. The Rice Lake line was opened by the Rice Lake, Dallas and Menomonie Railway in 1894, and the Almena line by the Minneapolis, Sault Ste. Marie and Atlantic Railway in 1884. Chetek
Chetek is a city in Barron County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,221 at the 2010 census. The city is located partially within the Town of Chetek. History The original inhabitants of the area were the Ojibwa Indians, who referred to the area as ''zhedeg'', meaning pelicans. This was translated into various spellings, such as Sheetak, Shetak, Shetuk, Chetack, until the first post office was opened in 1872. The spelling was then standardized to "Chetek." In 1872, the Omaha Railroad began service to Chetek, the Knapp-Stout logging camp was established, and the first log schoolhouse was built. Almena is a village in Barron County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 677 at the 2010 census. History A post office called Almena has been in operation since 1888. The village's name is an amalgamation of Albert and Wilhelmina, the names of a first settler and his wife. Almena was platted in 1891. The name Almena came about after the federal government rejected the name "Lightning City" for a post office, which was derived from the nearby Lightning Creek. Geography Almena is located on the boundary between the Town of Almena and the Town of Clinton, about northeast of Minneapolis.
