Wisconsin Highway 161
State Trunk Highway 161 (often called Highway 161, STH-161 or WIS 161) is a state highway in Portage and Waupaca counties in the central part of the US state of Wisconsin. It runs in east–west from US Highway 10 (US 10) northwest of Amherst Junction via Iola to WIS 22/ WIS 110 just west of Symco. Route description Starting at US 10 between Custer and Amherst Junction, WIS 161 begins to proceed eastward. It then passes Nelsonville and then New Hope. In Iola, WIS 161 briefly runs concurrently with WIS 49. Continuing eastward, WIS 161 then ends at WIS 22/WIS 110 near Symco. History Initially, in 1923, WIS 161 traveled from WIS 18 (later US 10; now CTH-KK) Amherst Junction to WIS 22 near Symco. Amherst Junction, Wisconsin
Amherst Junction is a village in Portage County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 377 at the 2010 census. History Amherst Junction was created when the railroad first came through the county. It was a junction between two railroads: the Wisconsin Central and the Green Bay and Lake Pepin railroads. Until 1875, the community was referred to as Groversburg, presumably after the Grover family that held considerable property in the area. But when a post office was established in March 1875, it was called Amherst Junction. It was not until 1911 that the village was incorporated. By 1914, the village had become an important buying and shipping center for potatoes. Many people traveling to the eastern and northeastern parts of the county would detrain in Amherst Junction and hire a rig from a livery in the village to take them to their destination. Wisconsin Highway 49
State Trunk Highway 49 (often called Highway 49, STH-49 or WIS 49) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It runs north–south in central and southeast Wisconsin from Wittenberg to Lomira. The highway was initially designated in 1917, but it had not been extended to its current length until the 1950s. Route description WIS 49 begins at an interchange with Interstate 41 (I-41) north of Lomira and runs west from it, passing through Brownsville before curving to the north to meet the Dodge- Fond du Lac county line. After an interchange with US 151 (US 151), WIS 49 runs through Waupun. Shortly after exiting Waupun, the highway curves and starts running north to Brandon. Shortly after exiting Brandon, the highway runs concurrently with WIS 44. This concurrency ends in Ripon, where a concurrency with WIS 23 begins. A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Its southern terminus is at US Highway 10 (US 10) and WIS 96 southeast of Fremont; its northern terminus is at US 45 in Marion. Route description The highway begins at an intersection with US 10 and WIS 96 southeast of Fremont. It heads north from US 10 for about half a mile before turning westward. State Trunk Highway 22 (often called Highway 22, STH-22 or WIS 22) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The route's trajectory is mostly south to north, with the exception of the segment between Shawano and the northern terminus being east–west. It is generally a two-lane surface road providing a connecting route between Waupaca, Shawano, Gillett and Oconto. Various urban sections have multilane segments.
