Wisconsin Gubernatorial Recall Election, 2012
The 2012 Wisconsin gubernatorial recall election was a special election to elect the governor and lieutenant governor of Wisconsin. It resulted in voters re-electing incumbent Republican governor Scott Walker over the Democratic candidate Tom Barrett by a larger margin than in 2010 when Walker also faced Barrett. Recall organizers opposed Walker's agenda, particularly his limiting of collective bargaining rights for state employees and they collected over 900,000 signatures to initiate the recall election process. There was also a recall for Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch. She won her race, defeating Democrat Mahlon Mitchell, making her the first lieutenant governor to run in and survive a recall. The Democratic primaries took place on May 8. The recall elections were held June 5 with Walker defeating Barrett. Scott Kevin Walker (born November 2, 1967) is an American politician who served as the 45th governor of Wisconsin from 2011 to 2019. A member of the Republican Party (United States), Republican Party, he previously served as List of Milwaukee County executives, Milwaukee County executive from 2002 to 2010. Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Walker was raised in Plainfield, Iowa and in Delavan, Wisconsin. Timothy Francis Cullen (February 25, 1944 – December 23, 2024) was an American Democratic Party (United States), Democratic politician from Janesville, Wisconsin. He was the majority leader of the Wisconsin Senate from 1982 to 1987; he served a total of 16 years in the state Senate, representing Wisconsin's 15th Senate district from 1975 to 1987, then again from 2011 to 2015. David Ross Obey ( ; born October 3, 1938) is an American lobbyist and former politician who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives for from 1969 to 2011. Kathleen Falk (born June 26, 1951) is an American attorney, politician, and policymaker from Wisconsin who served as Dane County Executive from 1997 until 2011. In 2013, she was appointed Regional Director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Region Five. 2011 Wisconsin Protests
The 2011 Wisconsin protests were a series of demonstrations in the state of Wisconsin in the United States beginning in February and involving as many as 100,000 protesters opposing the 2011 Wisconsin Act 10, also called the ''"Wisconsin Budget Repair bill."'' The protests centered on the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, with satellite protests also occurring at other municipalities throughout the state. Demonstrations took place at various college campuses, including the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. After the collective bargaining bill was upheld by the Wisconsin Supreme Court on June 14, the number of protesters declined to about 1,000 within a couple of days.
