The 92nd Assembly District of Wisconsin is one of 99 districts in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Located in western Wisconsin, the district covers all of Buffalo and Trempealeau counties, as well as most Pepin County, the western half of Jackson County, and part of southern Eau Claire County. It includes the cities of Arcadia, Galesville, Independence, Mondovi, and Whitehall, and contains Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge and Perrot State Park. Perrot State Park
Perrot State Park is a state park in Wisconsin's Driftless Area at the confluence of the Trempealeau and Mississippi rivers. The park features views of steep limestone bluffs and the river valleys. It has observation platforms for watching wildlife, including the variety of birds which inhabit or migrate through the park. Hiking trails and camping are available. Mountain bike trails penetrate deep inside the park. The park protects two State Natural Areas including Brady's Bluff Prairie and Trempealeau Mountain, a cone-shaped mountain surrounded by water. The Native Americans of the area traditionally considered the mountain sacred and used it as a landmark for meetings. Some earthwork mounds made by ancient Native American cultures are located in the park. This facility protects the site of one of the earliest encampments by European explorers in the upper Mississippi. Robert Thompson (Wisconsin Politician)
Robert Thompson (November 25, 1927 – June 1, 1999) was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly. Biography Thompson was born in Madison, Wisconsin. He graduated from Poynette High School in Poynette, Wisconsin. Later, he joined the United States Marshals Service. As a U.S. marshal, Thompson was in charge of law enforcement at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin in 1980, when it was used as an internment camp for Cuban refugees admitted as part of the Mariel boatlift. Thompson was married with one child. He died on June 1, 1999 after suffering a heart attack while watching a softball game. Political career Thompson was first elected to the Assembly in 1970 as a Democrat. After serving as Sergeant at Arms of the Wisconsin State Senate from 1975 to 1978, Thompson was again elected to the Assembly in 1982. Juneau County, Wisconsin
Juneau County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 26,718. Its county seat is Mauston. History Before white settlement, before loggers and explorers, the area that is now Juneau County was the home of Native Americans who left behind artifacts like the thunderbirds etched on the wall at Twin Bluffs and the Gee's Slough mounds outside New Lisbon. Juneau County was established in 1857 when the Wisconsin Legislature passed legislation separating lands west of the Wisconsin River from what was then Adams County. After a contest with neighboring New Lisbon, the county seat was established in Maugh's Town, which is known today as Mauston. The county was named after Solomon Juneau, a founder of Milwaukee. Clark County, Wisconsin
Clark County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 34,659. Its county seat is Neillsville. History By the early 1800s, the land and streams that are now Clark County were the hunting grounds of Chippewa, Dakota, Ho-Chunk and possibly Menominee peoples. In 1836 these Indians were joined by a party of French-Canadian fur traders who started a temporary post for the American Fur Company on the Black River's East Fork. The next White arrival was probably Mormon loggers in 1844, come to cut pine logs from the forests along the Black River and float them down to a sawmill at Black River Falls. From there the sawed wood would be floated down the river to be used in construction of the Mormon temple in Nauvoo, Illinois. They had camps on the river at what is called Mormon Riffle, a mile below Neillsville, near Weston's Rapids, and south of Greenwood. Sparta, Wisconsin
Sparta is a city in and the county seat of Monroe County, Wisconsin, United States, along the La Crosse River. The population was 10,025 at the 2020 census. History Sparta is located on former Ho-Chunk territory acquired by the United States in 1837. White settlement began after the government surveyed the land in 1849 and created a crossroads by building early state roads from Prairie du Chien to Hudson in 1849 and from Portage to La Crosse in 1851. The first recorded settlers were brothers Frank and William Petit, who opened a tavern near the crossroads in 1851. Their mother, recorded only as Mrs. Petit, named the settlement after the ancient Greek city-state of Sparta. A post office has been in operation at Sparta since 1852. In 1854, the Wisconsin Legislature named Sparta the county seat for the newly organized Monroe County. Robert L. Quackenbush (November 15, 1923 – October 6, 2006) was a Wisconsin politician. Born in Sparta, Wisconsin, he served in the United States Military during World War II.
