Winter Sports Complex ( tk, Gyşgy görnüşleri boýunça sport toplumy) is a multi-use indoor arena in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. It is one of the largest ice hockey arenas in the CIS. Overview Construction of a new Ice Palace began in 2009. Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a contract worth 134.4 million euros with the Turkish company "Polimeks Polimeks İnşaat ve Sanayi A.Ş. is a Turkish holding company based in Istanbul. The Turkmenistan national ice hockey team ( tk, Türkmenistanyň milli buz hokkeý ýygyndysy) is the national men's ice hockey team of Turkmenistan. Gurbanguly Mälikgulyýewiç Berdimuhamedow (born 29 June 1957), also known as Arkadag (Cyrillic: Аркадаг, "protector"), is a Turkmen politician who served as the second president of Turkmenistan from 2006 to 2022. A dentist by profession, Berdimuhamedow served in the government of president Saparmurat Niyazov as the minister of health in 1997 and as the vice president in 2001. Ice hockey is a minor sport that is gaining popularity in Turkmenistan. History Ice hockey never gained popularity in independent post-Soviet Turkmenistan until the president Saparmurat Niyazov ordered the construction of an Ice Palace in the desert foothills of the Kopet Dag.
