Winter Derby
The Winter Derby is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs () at Lingfield Park in February or March. History The event was established in 1998, and the inaugural edition was won by Running Stag. It was given Listed status in 1999, and promoted to Group 3 level in 2006. The Winter Derby is run on a Polytrack surface. It is one of four non-turf Group races in Britain, along with the Chipchase Stakes, September Stakes and the Sirenia Stakes. It is currently the country's first Group race of the year. Lingfield Park Racecourse
Lingfield Park Racecourse (commonly referred to as Lingfield) is a horse racing course at Lingfield in Surrey, United Kingdom. It is owned by the ARC Racing and Leisure Group, formerly Arena Leisure Plc. Lingfield is best known as a winter all-weather flat-racing course; the track is Polytrack, rather than the usual turf found in the UK. There are only five other all-weather courses in the UK, the others being at Southwell, Kempton, Wolverhampton, Newcastle, and Chelmsford City (formerly Great Leighs Racecourse). Lingfield stages flat racing on turf in the summer and National Hunt races are also run on turf. Lingfield Railway Station adjoins the course, served by trains from London to East Grinstead via Oxted. Clive Brittain
Clive Brittain (born 15 December 1934) is a retired British race-horse trainer. He started in racing as an apprentice in 1949, and became a licensed trainer from 1972 after working for Noel Murless. He trained at Carlburg Stables in Newmarket, Suffolk and sent out his final runner prior to retirement in October 2015. His best-known horse is Pebbles, winner of the 1,000 Guineas in 1984 and the Breeders' Cup Turf in 1985. Seb Sanders
Seb Sanders (born 25 September 1971 in Birmingham, England) is a former flat race jockey. Sanders was British Champion Flat Jockey in 2007, a title he shared with Jamie Spencer. Early life Born in Birmingham, Sanders' father, a plumber introduced him to racing by a chance meeting of Tamworth based trainer Bryan McMahon. Sanders himself was keen to be a professional footballer for Birmingham City, but his father was able to secure him work at McMahon's yard. After which, McMahon sent Sanders to the British Racing School in Newmarket. Career Sanders rode his first winner on 12 June 1990 on Band On The Run at Pontefract. In 1994, Sanders moved to Reg Akehurst's yard in Epsom and won the 1995 Champion Apprentice title, with 61 winners. Mick Easterby
Michael William Easterby (born 30 March 1931) is a British racehorse trainer. He is a dual-purpose trainer, saddling runners in both flat racing and National Hunt racing. He gained his only Classic winner with Mrs McArdy in the 1977 1,000 Guineas and his major successes have come with Lochnager, winner of the King's Stand Stakes, July Cup and Nunthorpe Stakes in 1976; and Peterhof, winner of the Triumph Hurdle also in 1976. His most recent British Pattern race winner came in the 2007 Winter Derby with Gentleman's Deal. Mick combines training racehorses with farming and has run a working farm at Sheriff Hutton since the 1950s. Jeremy Noseda
Jeremy Noseda (born 17 September 1963) is a retired British racehorse trainer. After six years working for John Dunlop, and five years as assistant to John Gosden, he joined Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation in late 1993, and played a significant role in training such horses as Lammtarra, Halling and Balanchine. Noseda started training under his own name in January 1996, initially in California, then returning to Britain in late 1997. He is based at the Shalfleet stables in Newmarket formerly occupied by Paul Kelleway. He enjoyed his first Classic victory when Araafa won the Irish 2,000 Guineas in 2006. His first triumph in an English Classic came the same year with Sixties Icon winning the St Leger at York. Richard Hughes (born 11 January 1973) is a retired Irish jockey and current racehorse trainer who is based at Lambourn in Berkshire, England. Born in Dublin, he is the son of successful National Hunt trainer, Dessie Hughes. Hughes became British flat racing Champion Jockey in 2012 and retained that title in 2013, when he rode more than 200 winners in the season, and again in 2014.
