Winslow, Arizona
Winslow ( nv, ) is a city in Navajo County, Arizona, United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city is 9,655. It is approximately southeast of Flagstaff, west of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and southeast of Las Vegas. History Winslow was named for either Edward F. Winslow, president of St. Louis and San Francisco Rail Road, which owned half of the old Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, or Tom Winslow, a prospector who lived in the area. The last Harvey House (La Posada Hotel), designed by Mary Colter, opened in 1930. The hotel closed in 1957 and was used by the Santa Fe Railway for offices. The railroad abandoned La Posada in 1994 and announced plans to tear it down. It was bought and restored by Allan Affeldt and it serves as a hotel. U.S. Route 66 was originally routed through the city. A contract to build Interstate 40 as a bypass north of Winslow was awarded at the end of 1977. Winslow is a market town and Civil parishes in England, civil parish designated as a town council in the north of the Unitary Authority of Buckinghamshire, England. It has a population of just over 4,400. It is located approximately south-east of Buckingham, and south-west of Bletchley (Milton Keynes). History Winslow was first recorded in a royal charter of 792–793 in which it was granted by Offa of Mercia to St Albans Abbey as ''Wineshauue'', which means ''Wine's Burial Mound'' The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as ''Weneslai''. A late Celtic copper torc has been found here, and also a silver drinking-cup of late Roman design. The 1841 census reveals the population that year was 1,333. Notable buildings Winslow Hall sits on the main road leading into the town from Aylesbury. History Winslow was originally an Indian settlement named Taconock. During King William's War, Major Benjamin Church led his third expedition east from Boston in 1692. During this expedition he and 450 troops raided the native villages at both Penobscot ( Castine, Maine) and present-day Winslow. Winslow was then settled by colonists from Plymouth Colony. The area was covered by the land patent given by the English Crown to Pilgrim governor William Bradford and his associates. The earliest settlers had such Old Colony and Pilgrim names as Winslow, Bradford, Warren, and Otis. Descendants of those early settlers can still be found in the town. Winslow, Arkansas
Winslow (formerly Summit Home) is a city in southern Washington County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 391 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Northwest Arkansas region. History A stagecoach stop for many years, the community now known as Winslow first received a post office on December 11, 1876, known as Summit Home. The town grew significantly upon completion of the Winslow Tunnel, which allowed the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway (Frisco) to run through the steep Boston Mountains of south Washington County. The town was renamed to Winslow on August 3, 1881 in honor of Edward F. Winslow, president of the Frisco Railroad. The town became a somewhat resort town for its picturesque peaks at the end of the 19th century, drawing many wealthy from the Fort Smith area to summer there. Winslow station is an Amtrak train station at 501 East Second Street in Winslow, Navajo County, Arizona, United States. It is served daily by Amtrak's ''Southwest Chief'' between Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California. The Santa Fe Depot and La Posada Hotel Harvey House compound are the centerpiece of the La Posada Historic District (established 1992). Architecture The Santa Fe Railway station was built in 1929, and the adjacent La Posada Hotel and Gardens was completed in 1930. Both were designed by renowned architect Mary Jane Colter. She is the architect of various notable Fred Harvey Company buildings, including others at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and in New Mexico. Winslow Rural District was a rural district in the administrative county of Buckinghamshire, England from 1894 to 1974, covering an area in the north of the county. Origins The district had its origins in the Winslow Poor Law Union, which had been created in 1835, covering Winslow itself and several surrounding parishes. In 1872 sanitary districts were established, giving public health and local government responsibilities for rural areas to the existing boards of guardians of poor law unions. As there were no urban authorities within the Winslow Poor Law Union, the Winslow Rural Sanitary District covered the same area as the poor law union. The poor law union and rural sanitary district were administered from Winslow Union Workhouse, which had been built in 1835 at 1 Buckingham Road in Winslow.
