Winschoterzijl
Winschoterzijl is a former hamlet in the municipality of Oldambt (municipality), Oldambt in the northeast of the Netherlands. It was also a Sconce (fortification), sconce, and is still a Lock (water navigation), lock. The village was settled by Lutheranism, Lutheran refugees from East Frisia during the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648). In 1992, Winschoterzijl was demolished during the widening of the Pekel A. Pekel A
Pekel A (also Pekel Aa; ) is a river in the Province of Groningen in the Netherlands. The villages of Oude Pekela and Nieuwe Pekela have been named after the river. The name translates to Brine ('' Pekel'') River ('' A''), and used to flow from the Dollart into a large raised bog. The Dollart was poldered from the 15th century until 1924, and the river now has its source at the confluence with the at . The river was canalised and extended. The part from Oude Pekela to Stadskanaal was renamed . From 1599 until 1810, the area through which the river flowed, was a peat colony. De Olde Molen
De Olde Molen is a windmill in Palm Beach, Aruba. It was originally built in 1815 as a windpump in Winschoterzijl, Groningen, Netherlands. In 1897, it was moved to Wedderveer, Groningen where it served as a gristmill. In 1960, it was bought by Theo Paalman and G.J. Woudenberg, two Aruban businessmen, disassembled and rebuilt in Aruba. The windmill is home to a restaurant and a windmill museum. It is located next to the Bubali Bird Sanctuary. History In 1804 a mill was constructed as a windpump in Winschoterzijl. The mill burnt down in 1814, and was rebuilt in 1815. In 1883, it was sold, and was relocated to Wedderveer, Groningen. In 1897, the windmill was rebuilt and functioned as a gristmill. Beerta () is a village and former municipality with a population of 2,205 in the municipality of Oldambt in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. In the 20th century, Beerta was a communist stronghold. In 1933, the municipal council was dismissed by the government, and was ruled by a until 1935. Between 1982 and 1990, Beerta was the only municipality with a communist mayor. Wedde () is a village in the municipality Westerwolde in the province Groningen in the Netherlands. It is located 9 km southeast of Winschoten. The castle Wedderborg is located in the village. History Most of Westerwolde was a raised bog with few inhabitants, however it formed a natural border between Groningen, East Frisia and the Prince-Bishopric of Münster, and therefore changed ownership many times during its history. Bellingwedde () was a municipality with a population of in the province Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. Bellingwedde was established in 1968, when the municipalities of Bellingwolde and Wedde had merged. It contained the villages Bellingwolde, Blijham, Oudeschans, Veelerveen, Vriescheloo, and Wedde. Windpump
A windpump is a type of windmill which is used for pumping water. Windpumps were used to pump water since at least the 9th century in what is now Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. The use of wind pumps became widespread across the Muslim world and later spread to China and Indian subcontinent, India. Windmills were later used extensively in Europe, particularly in the Netherlands and the East Anglia area of Great Britain, from the late Middle Ages onwards, to drain land for agricultural or building purposes. Simon Stevin's work in the ''waterstaet'' involved improvements to the sluices and spillways to control flooding.
