Winnebago is an unincorporated community in the Town of Oshkosh in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, United States. It is located just outside the northeast edge of the city of Oshkosh. The Winnebago Mental Health Institute is located in Winnebago. The ZIP code is: 54985. U.S. Route 45 ran through the community until the road's route was moved west; the former route is now occupied by County Highway A. 2017 water issues The community residents began receiving water and sewer utilities from the Winnebago Health Institute in the 1940s. In April 2017, 24 community residents received a letter from the state of Wisconsin stating that it will be shutting off their water and sewer on August 1, 2017. The institute receives water from the City of Oshkosh which annexed the institute in 1998; the institute had sent letters to the town and city asking for them to come up with a solution. Gene Englund
Gene Eniar Englund (October 21, 1917 – November 5, 1995) was an American professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for one season, , and split the season playing for the Boston Celtics and Tri-Cities Blackhawks. Although he played professionally, Englund is best remembered for being a star college basketball player for Wisconsin, where as a senior in 1940–41 he led the Badgers to win the NCAA national championship. Early life Englund was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He attended Kenosha High School in Kenosha where he graduated in 1936. Winnebago Mental Health Institute
Winnebago Mental Health Institute (WMHI), formerly the Winnebago State Hospital, is a psychiatric hospital near Oshkosh, Wisconsin, United States located in the unincorporated community of Winnebago, Wisconsin. History The Winnebago State Hospital was one of several 19th-century psychiatric hospitals in the United States built on the Kirkbride Plan, a style of mental asylum design advocated by Philadelphia psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride in the mid-19th century. The site of the hospital was the object of a competition between Green Bay and Oshkosh in 1870. The voters in the area approved an expenditure of $16,700 to begin construction. Construction first began for the institute in 1871. It opened in 1873 as the Northern State Hospital for the Insane, with the first patient admitted on April 21, 1873. Oshkosh is a city in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, of which it is the county seat. The city had a population of 66,816 in 2020, making it the ninth-largest city in Wisconsin. It is also adjacent to the Town of Oshkosh. History Oshkosh was named for Menominee Chief Oshkosh, whose name meant "claw" (cf. Ojibwe ''oshkanzh'', "the claw"). Although the fur trade attracted the first European settlers to the area as early as 1818, it never became a major player in the fur trade. Area code 920 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for a large area of eastern Wisconsin. It was created on July 26, 1997, in a split from area code 414, which formerly served the entire eastern third of the state. 920 is scheduled to be overlaid with area code 274 on May 5, 2023. In 2008, service providers recognized the need for a second area code for northeastern Wisconsin, leading the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to approve an overlay plan with new area code 274.
