Winkie Direko
Isabella Winkie Direko (27 November 192917 February 2012) was a South African politician born in the Free State (province), Free State province of South Africa. She was a member of the African National Congress and served as Premier of the Free State from 1999 to 2004. Early life Isabella Winkie Direko was born on 27 November 1929 in Botshabelo near Bloemfontein. She spent her childhood with her parents at her paternal grandmother's home. Her parents initially resided in Waaihoek before the forced removals in the 1920s. They were then forced to move back to Botshabelo. Her name Winkie was initially her nickname but she later adopted it as her official name. Within political ranks she became known as Ausi Winkie or Mistress Winkie. She spent the later part of her childhood in the Heidedal township of Bloemfontein – predominantly an area for Coloureds, Coloured South Africans. The Free State, known as Orange Free State until the 28th of June 1995 when its name was changed, is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Bloemfontein, which is also South Africa's judicial capital. Its historical origins lie in the Boer republic called the Orange Free State and later Orange Free State Province. The All-African Convention conference took place from 15–18 December 1935. Notable figures who attended the delegation included Davidson Don Tengo Jabavu, Pixley ka Isaka Seme, JL Dube, Zacharias Richard Mahabane, Alfred Bitini Xuma, James Moroka and Thabo Edwin Mofutsanyana. Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a spectrum of conditions caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a retrovirus. Following initial infection an individual may not notice any symptoms, or may experience a brief period of influenza-like illness. Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality
Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality is an administrative area in the Thabo Mofutsanyane District of the Free State in South Africa. It encompasses substantially all of the former bantustan of QwaQwa, except for the small enclave (detached portion) at Botshabelo. The population is almost entirely Southern Sotho. The municipality is named after the Drakensberg mountains (known as "Maluti" in Sesotho). The peak in QwaQwa is known as the Sentinel, which is called "Phofung" in Sesotho. Problems Maluti-a-Phofung is one of the very poor municipalities in the Free State; as of 2011 over 82% live below the poverty line. Prior to 1994, the area was relatively prosperous with over 250,000 people employed in the textile and furniture industries, mostly at low wages.
