Winfield S. Sherwood
Winfield Scott Sherwood (1817 – June 25, 1870) was an American politician from New York and California. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Warren Co.) in 1846. On July 14, 1849, Sherwood was elected a delegate to the California Constitutional Convention, and was one of the signers of the California Constitution of 1849. He ran against Peter H. Burnett in the first statewide election for Governor of California after Mexican rule in 1849, but he lost. He later became a district judge. The New York State Assembly is the lower house of the New York State Legislature, with the New York State Senate being the upper house. There are 150 seats in the Assembly. The 69th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 6 to May 13, 1846, during the second year of Silas Wright's governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1821, 32 Senators were elected on general tickets in eight senatorial districts for four-year terms. They were divided into four classes, and every year eight Senate seats came up for election. The 1852 United States presidential election was the 17th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 2, 1852. Democrat Franklin Pierce defeated Whig nominee General Winfield Scott. Incumbent Whig President Millard Fillmore had succeeded to the presidency in 1850 upon the death of President Zachary Taylor. Fillmore endorsed the Compromise of 1850 and enforced the Fugitive Slave Law. This earned Fillmore Southern voter support and Northern voter opposition.
