Winchester Lake
Winchester Lake (also known as Lapwai Lake) is a man-made body of water located on the south side of Winchester, Idaho, Winchester in Lewis County, Idaho, Lewis County, Idaho. It is the central feature of Winchester Lake State Park. The lake covers , has an average depth of , and is deep at its deepest point. History The lake was created in 1910, when the Craig Mountain Lumber Company placed a dam at the headwaters of Lapwai Creek forming a mill pond that was used until the early 1960s by which time the area's marketable timber had all been felled. The lumber mill was the largest of its kind in Idaho Panhandle, northern Idaho, employing as many as 270 workers. The mill pond was also a source of electric power for the town. The lake was purchased from Potlatch Corp., Potlatch Forests in 1966 by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, which then turned over the lake and surrounding land to the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation in 1969 for development of the state park. Lewis County, Idaho
Lewis County is a county located in the north central region of the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2020 census, the population was 3,533, making it the fourth-least populous county in Idaho. The county seat is Nezperce, and Kamiah is the largest city. Partitioned from Nez Perce County and established in 1911, it was named after the explorer Meriwether Lewis. Most of the county is within the Nez Perce Indian Reservation, though Native Americans comprise less than 6% of the county population. Similar to the opening of lands in Oklahoma, the U.S. government opened the reservation for white settlement in November 1895. The proclamation had been signed less than two weeks earlier by President Cleveland.
