Winchester City Police
Winchester City Police was the police force of Winchester, Hampshire, England from 1832 to 1943. The City of Winchester became the first place in Hampshire to set up a police force, four years before any other part of the county, and seven years before the county force was established at the end of 1839. The force was established with an Inspector (Robert Buchanan) and seven constables on 28 July 1832. They were given an office in the Old Guildhall (now Lloyds Bank) to run the force. The force nearly folded through lack of funds, but with the Municipal Corporations Act 1835, Winchester formed a Watch Committee and was able to secure funds to keep the police force. Funds were always a cause for concern for the Winchester police, when the Hampshire force was established, in 1839, the county council tried to incorporate the Winchester police, but the city watch committee always voted to keep an independent police force. The London and South Western Railway (LSWR, sometimes written L&SWR) was a railway company in England from 1838 to 1922. Originating as the London and Southampton Railway, its network extended to Dorchester and Weymouth, to Salisbury, Exeter and Plymouth, and to Padstow, Ilfracombe and Bude. It developed a network of routes in Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire, including Portsmouth and Reading. The LSWR became famous for its express passenger trains to Bournemouth and Weymouth, and to Devon and Cornwall. Nearer London it developed a dense suburban network and was pioneering in the introduction of a widespread suburban electrified passenger network. North Riding Of Yorkshire Constabulary
The North Riding of Yorkshire Constabulary was the territorial police force for the North Riding of Yorkshire from 1856 to 1968. Formed in 1856 as a result of the County and Borough Police Act 1856 it covered all of the North Riding except for the boroughs of Middlesbrough, Richmond and Scarborough, which had their own Borough Constabularies. Initially the force consisted of a Chief Constable, Captain Thomas Hill, and 50 men. Norfolk Constabulary is the territorial police force responsible for policing Norfolk in East Anglia, England. The force serves a population of 908,000 in a mostly rural area of , including 90 miles of coastline and 16 rivers, including the Broads National Park. Police Act 1946
The Police Act 1946 (1946 c.46) was an Act of Parliament of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that provided for the amalgamation of smaller borough police forces with county constabularies in England and Wales, allowed for the merger of county forces in certain circumstances and changed the boundaries of the Metropolitan Police District. The appointed day for the amalgamations was 1 April 1947. On that date forty-five non-county borough police forces were merged with those of the counties in which they were situated. In the case of fourteen of these boroughs, they had already been temporarily placed under the county police by the Defence (Amalgamation of Police Forces) Regulations 1942. Section 13 of the 1946 Act made these amalgamations permanent.
