Alexander Winchell
Alexander Winchell (December 31, 1824, in North East, New York – February 19, 1891, in Ann Arbor, Michigan) was a United States geologist who contributed to this field mainly as an educator and a popular lecturer and author. His views on evolution aroused controversy among his contemporaries; today the racism of these views is more cause for comment. Biography Education Winchell graduated from the Wesleyan University of Middletown, Connecticut, in 1847. Early career He then taught at Pennington Male Seminary of New Jersey, Amenia Seminary of New York (where he had previously been a student), an academy in Newbern, Alabama, and the Mesopotamia Female Seminary of Eutaw, the last of which was founded by him. He became president of the Masonic University at Selma, Alabama, in 1853. He was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1865. Paul Winchell (''né'' Wilchinsky; December 21, 1922 – June 24, 2005) was an American actor, comedian, humanitarian, inventor and ventriloquist whose career flourished in the 1950s and 1960s. Mount Winchell, a thirteener, is among the thirty highest peaks of California. It is in the Palisades region of the Sierra Nevada, on the Sierra Crest between Mount Agassiz and Thunderbolt Peak. Geography The Inyo-Kern County line follows Winchell's northwest-southeast ridges. Hydrologically, this same boundary divides the Big Pine Creek drainage from Dusy Basin, part of the Kings River's headwaters. Its west slopes fall within Kings Canyon National Park, while its east slopes are in the John Muir Wilderness of the Inyo National Forest. Winchell, Texas
Winchell is an unincorporated community in Brown County, Texas, United States. History Winchell was founded sometime before 1900 and was originally named Broadtown or Brown Town for E.J. Broad, who built a store in the area. Its name was changed to Winchell in 1903, most likely for B.L. Winchell, who was the president of the Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railway that built a track from there to Brady. The first postmaster was Charles Wilson. Other buildings sprang up along the track, which included a depot and several businesses. It had a cotton gin, several businesses, and 300 residents in 1914. A decade later, all buildings burned and were never rebuilt, causing the postal service to continue until 1958. In the early 1930s, Winchell had two churches, three businesses, and several scattered houses along the highway. Walter Winchell (April 7, 1897 – February 20, 1972) was a syndicated American newspaper gossip columnist and radio news commentator. Originally a vaudeville performer, Winchell began his newspaper career as a Broadway reporter, critic and columnist for New York Tabloid (newspaper format), tabloids. Verne Hedges Winchell (October 30, 1915 – November 26, 2002) was the founder of Winchell's Donuts and also served as a chairman, president, and chief executive officer of the Denny's restaurant chain.
