Wim Overgaauw
Wim Overgaauw (23 November 1929 – 30 November 1995) was a Dutch jazz guitarist. After trying the violin, he switched to guitar and became a self-taught guitarist. He worked for American forces in Germany, toured the Netherlands with pianist Pim Jacobs and singer Rita Reys, and became a studio musician and guitar teacher in Hilversum. He showed little interest in the business aspects of the music industry. The few albums he recorded as a leader are largely in the genre of easy listening. Blue Jack Jazz Records posthumously released some of his jazz concerts on CD. His playing also lives on in students he taught at the Hilversum Conservatory, such as Jesse van Ruller Jesse van Ruller (born 21 January 1972) is a Dutch jazz guitarist and composer. Hilversum
Hilversum () is a city and municipality in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. Located in the heart of the Gooi, it is the largest urban centre in that area. It is surrounded by heathland, woods, meadows, lakes, and smaller towns. Easy Listening
Easy listening (including mood music) is a popular music genre and radio format that was most popular during the 1950s to 1970s. It is related to middle-of-the-road (MOR) music and encompasses instrumental recordings of standards, hit songs, non-rock vocals and instrumental covers of selected popular rock songs. It mostly concentrates on music that pre-dates the rock and roll era, characteristically on music from the 1940s and 1950s. It was differentiated from the mostly instrumental beautiful music format by its variety of styles, including a percentage of vocals, arrangements and tempos to fit various parts of the broadcast day. Easy listening music is often confused with lounge music, but while it was popular in some of the same venues it was meant to be listened to for enjoyment rather than as background sound. Pim Jacobs
Willem Bernard "Pim" Jacobs (29 October 1934 – 3 July 1996) was a Dutch jazz pianist, composer and television presenter. Early life Jacobs was born on 29 October 1934 in Hilversum, the Netherlands. His parents were artistic. He started playing the piano at the age of six. His brother, Ruud, was born in 1938 and became a jazz bassist. Later life and career Pim and Ruud formed a trio with drummer Wessel Ilcken in 1954. The band grew with the addition of guitarist Wim Overgaauw and Ilcken's wife, Rita Reys. The trio recorded with Herbie Mann in 1956. Following Ilcken's death in 1957, Pim Jacobs and Reys performed as a duo or trio with Overgaauw, and married in 1960. They often recorded and played jazz festivals in Europe and New Orleans, "their typical program featuring arrangements of vocal music standards as well as bebop material". Rita Reys
Rita Reys (born Maria Everdina Reijs; 21 December 1924 – 28 July 2013) was a jazz singer from the Netherlands. She was promoted as "Europe's First Lady of Jazz". In the 1980s, Rita returned to the American Songbook, recording albums such as ''Memories of You'' with the Lex Jasper orchestra. She died in Breukelen, the Netherlands, on 28 July 2013. He won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Guitar Competition in 1995 and has recorded several albums as a leader and more as a sideman.
