Wilton Station (Metro-North)
Wilton station is a commuter rail station on the Danbury Branch of the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line, located in Wilton, Connecticut. It's one of 2 rail stations located within the town of Wilton. The station first opened in 1852 and is the most used station on the Danbury Branch by weekday passengers. History Wilton station opened in 1852 alongside Cannondale station, Georgetown station, and Kent station on the Danbury and Norwalk Railroad. The original station house was replaced in 1939 by the current one. The original station was moved north to the nearby property of Charles Dana in 1941. Following the death of Dana in 1968, the town acquired the Dana property. However, the original station had fallen into advanced disrepair, and after almost being demolished in 1974, the original station house was moved to Lambert Corners in 1978., where it remains today. Georgetown Station (Metro-North)
Georgetown station is a former commuter rail station on the Danbury Division of the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad, located in Georgetown, Connecticut. It was in service from 1852 to 1970. A new station at Georgetown has been proposed. History Georgetown station was opened in 1852 on the Danbury and Norwalk Railroad. The station was located on the east side of the single track in the section of Georgetown that lies within the Town of Wilton. In 1899, the original depot caught fire. The damage to the depot was so severe that about 40 feet of the large depot had to be demolished, resulting in separated freight and passenger station buildings. The station building was home to a grocery store and a post office. A new station was opened in late 1908. The station would continue to serve passengers until its closure by the Penn Central in 1970. There is possibility of a new Georgetown station in the future. An island platform (also center platform, centre platform) is a station layout arrangement where a single platform is positioned between two tracks within a railway station, tram stop or transitway interchange. Island platforms are popular on twin-track routes due to pragmatic and cost reasons. They are also useful within larger stations where local and express services for the same direction of travel can be provided from opposite sides of the same platform thereby simplifying transfers between the two tracks. Kent Road station was a commuter rail stop on the Danbury Branch of the Metro-North Railroad's New Haven Line. It was located near the border between Wilton and Norwalk, south of a grade crossing with Kent Road in Wilton, Connecticut. It opened in 1976 and closed in 1994. A previous station on the site, South Wilton, closed in 1971. History Original station The original station located at the site was located on the north side of Kent Road and was originally called Kent. Kent was opened in 1852 by the Danbury and Norwalk Railroad. The name of the station was changed to South Wilton when the railroad was leased by the Housatonic Railroad in 1886, possibly to distinguish it from the HRR's already existing station in the town of Kent. It joins the Harlem Line at Mount Vernon, New York and continues south to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan.
