Wilshire Stakes
The Wilshire Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares age three and older. The race runs over a distance of one mile (8 furlongs) on turf track and is scheduled annually in May at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. History The event was inaugurated on 30 June 1953 as the Wilshire Mile a one-mile race on dirt for three-year-old fillies that was won by the British bred filly Ria Rica in an upset victory in the time of 1:37 before a Tuesday crowd of 23,158. It was not run again until 1963, when it was revived as an event called the Wilshire Handicap that included older fillies and mares over 7 furlongs. The first running of the event on turf was in 1970 as the Wilshire Stakes. In 1973 the event was run in two divisions. Santa Anita Park is a Thoroughbred racetrack in Arcadia, California, United States. It offers some of the prominent horse racing events in the United States during early fall, winter and in spring. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Joel Rosario (born January 14, 1985) is a Champion jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing, originally from the Dominican Republic. In the space of five weeks in 2013 he rode the winners of the Dubai World Cup and the Kentucky Derby. More recently, he rode Knicks Go to wins in the Pegasus World Cup, Whitney Stakes, and Breeders' Cup Classic in 2021. Career On December 11, 2009, Rosario equaled a Hollywood Park Racetrack record when he won six races on a single race card. Mario Gutierrez (jockey)
Mario Gutierrez (; born 1987) is a Mexican Thoroughbred horse racing jockey who won the 2012 Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes aboard I'll Have Another, a colt owned by Windsor, Ontario, native J. Paul Reddam and his wife, Zillah. He also won the 2016 Kentucky Derby aboard Nyquist, also owned by Reddam and trained by Doug O'Neill. Jerry Hollendorfer (born June 18, 1946, in Akron, Ohio) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse Horse trainer, trainer whose notable horses include Eclipse Award winners Blind Luck, Shared Belief and Songbird (horse), Songbird. Tyler Baze (born October 19, 1982, in Seattle, Washington) is an American Champion jockey. He was born into a racing family, since both of his parents were jockeys, as is his uncle, Gary Baze. His second cousin is U.S. Racing Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze. Baze began riding in Southern California in 1999 and earned his first victory on October 31 of that year. Rafael Bejarano (born June 23, 1982 in Arequipa, Peru) is a champion jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing. He trained at the Peruvian national riding school before embarking on his professional career in 1999. Having met with success, including winning the apprentice riding title at Hipódromo de Monterrico in Lima, he emigrated to the United States in the spring of 2002 and settled in Louisville, Kentucky.
