Willy Østreng
Willy Østreng (born 4 May 1941) is a Norwegian political scientist. Holding the cand.polit. degree, Østreng was employed as a researcher at the Fridtjof Nansen Institute in 1971. He went on to become managing director of the Fridtjof Nansen Institute from 1978 to 2003, and scientific director of the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters from 2003 to 2009. Østreng was also an adjunct professor at the University of Trondheim from 1994, and senior researcher in Ocean Futures from 2010. In 2008 he was a co-founder of the Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research. His main field as a researcher has been the Barents Region. Fridtjof Nansen Institute
The Fridtjof Nansen Institute (FNI) is an independent research foundation specializing in research on international environmental, energy and resource management issues, including political and legal aspects. The institute is named after the Norwegian Arctic explorer, scientist, diplomat and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen. It is situated in Nansen's old mansion, Polhøgda, in Bærum municipality outside Oslo. Organisation The Fridtjof Nansen Institute has 30-40 scholarly employees. The Barents Region is a name given, by advocates of establishing international cooperation after the fall of the Soviet Union, to the land along the coast of the Barents Sea, from Nordland in Norway to the Kola Peninsula in Russia and beyond all the way to the Ural Mountains and Novaya Zemlya, and south to the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea and the great lakes Ladoga and Onega.
