Willochra Creek
Willochra Creek is an ephemeral watercourse in the Far North region of South Australia. From Mount Remarkable, where it is also known as Mount Remarkable Creek, it flows generally eastwards to Melrose township at the foot of the mount. It thence flows generally northwards east of Mount Remarkable National Park across the eponymous Willochra Plain and through the locality of Bruce to the locality of Willochra itself at the heart of the plain. In Willochra locality the creek is also known as the Willochra Overflow and is joined by Boolcunda Creek. Being assisted by flows from several other water courses north of Willochra locality, the flows ultimately end up crossing through a sharp gorge in the Flinders Ranges north of Mount Stephen and into the south end of Lake Torrens about due west of Hawker. Far North (South Australia)
The Far North is a large region of South Australia close to the Northern Territory border. Colloquial usage of the term in South Australia refers to that part of South Australia north of a line roughly from Ceduna through Port Augusta to Broken Hill. The South Australian Government defines the Far North region similarly with the exception of the Maralinga Tjarutja Lands, the Yalata Aboriginal community and other unincorporated crown lands in the state's far west, which are officially considered part of the Eyre and Western region. Mount Remarkable
Mount Remarkable is a mountain in South Australia located in the Flinders Ranges about north of the centre of the capital city of Adelaide and immediately north-west of the town of Melrose, which was once named Mount Remarkable itself, and which is located at its base. The mountain has a height of . It and the adjoining range is described as having “high strike ridges on quartzite” with “lower rounded ridges on shale” and as having a “cover of forest, parkland and some woodland”. Lake Torrens
Lake Torrens (Kuyani: ''Ngarndamukia'') is a large ephemeral, normally endorheic salt lake in central South Australia. After sufficiently extreme rainfall events, the lake flows out through the Pirie-Torrens corridor to the Spencer Gulf. Islands on the lake include Andamooka Island and Murdie Island, both near the western shore; Trimmer Inlet runs between Andamooka Island and the shore, and Carrapateena Arm is an arm extending westwards south of Murdie Island. Melrose, South Australia
Melrose is the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. The town was once named "Mount Remarkable". At the 2016 Australian census, Melrose had a population of 347. The town is known for its proximity to Mount Remarkable and the surrounding National Park, its caravan park and historical sites including Jacka's brewery and Melrose Courthouse. History Journalist Rodney Cockburn, in his popular book ''What's in a Name'' asserts that consensus has not yet been reached about the origins of Melrose's name. Willochra Plain
The Willochra Plain is a wide plain situated east of Port Augusta, South Australia. The area falls in the view from Mount Brown Lookout and from walking trails in The Dutchmans Stern Conservation Park. History The traditional owners of the area are the Ngadjuri people. The first European explorer to sight the plain was Thomas Burr in September 1842. Burr was traversing the coastal plain between present Port Augusta and Port Pirie, on the western side of the rugged Southern Flinders Ranges, when he decided to leave the coast to cross eastward over the ranges. From the eastern escarpment he found that the ranges overlooked extensive "well-wooded and watered country", now called the Willochra Plain, stretching from what is now Melrose northward toward Quorn. Bruce, South Australia
Bruce is a town and a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located about north of the state capital of Adelaide. The Town of Bruce was surveyed in February 1881 on land in the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Willochra. It was proclaimed on 19 May 1881. Its name is reported in one source as being named after a "well known landowner in the district" while another source suggests that it was named by the Governor of South Australia after one of his family or friends. It was the site of a railway station on the Peterborough–Quorn railway line which operated from 1882 to 1987. A post office operated from 1882 to 1976 and a school operated from 1882 to 1962. Boundaries for the locality were proclaimed on 13 March 1997 and was named after the town whose site is located within its boundaries. Flinders Ranges
The Flinders Ranges are the largest mountain range in South Australia, which starts about north of Adelaide. The ranges stretch for over from Port Pirie to Lake Callabonna. The Adnyamathanha people are the Aboriginal group who have inhabited the range for tens of thousands of years. Its most well-known landmark is Wilpena Pound / Ikara, a formation that creates a natural amphitheatre covering and containing the range's highest peak, St Mary Peak ().
