Willie Welsh
William Berridge Welsh (11 February 1907 – 27 February 1987) was a Scottish international rugby union player, and later rugby league footballer, who played for and the Lions.Bath, p. 118 Welsh scored his début try in his first international against the 1927-8 Waratahs from New South Wales, and was capped 21 times for Scotland.McLaren, p. 11 He also played for Hawick. He toured with the 1930 British Lions, including a match against the All Blacks, and was the only Scot on the squad. The Welsh player Ivor Jones, who played alongside him in the tour, described Willie Welsh as "one of the truly great forwards". Bill McLaren, who would later play for Hawick RFC himself, remembers the game of Willie Welsh. Hawick ( ; sco, Haaick; gd, Hamhaig) is a town in the Scottish Borders council area and historic county of Roxburghshire in the east Southern Uplands of Scotland. It is south-west of Jedburgh and south-south-east of Selkirk. It is one of the farthest towns from the sea in Scotland, in the heart of Teviotdale, and is the biggest town in the former county of Roxburghshire. A dual-code rugby international is a rugby footballer who has played at the senior international level in both codes of rugby, 13-a-side rugby league and 15-a-side rugby union. Rugby league started as a breakaway version of rugby in Northern England in 1895 and in New Zealand and Australia in 1908, and consequently a number of early top-class rugby league players had been star players in the rugby union code. Accordingly, a high proportion of Australia and New Zealand's dual-code rugby internationals played in rugby league's formative years in those countries. From 1910 to 1995, dual-code internationals were infrequent and with the single exception of Karl Ifwersen, the player had always first appeared as a union international before shifting to league, due to strict bans applied by administrators in rugby union, which remained amateur, to those players who crossed to the professional code. The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU; gd, Aonadh Rugbaidh na h-Alba) is the governing body of rugby union in Scotland. Styled as Scottish Rugby, it is the second oldest Rugby Union, having been founded in 1873.
