Willie McGee (Gaelic Footballer)
William McGee (born 1947) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer. His league and championship career at senior level with the Mayo county team spanned nine seasons from 1967 to 1976. McGee made his debut on the inter-county scene when he was selected for the Mayo minor team. A Connacht runner-up in this grade, he later won an All-Ireland medal with the Mayo under-21 team in 1967. McGee made his senior debut during the 1967–68 league. Over the course of the next nine seasons, he won one Conncaht medal and one National Football League medal. He played his last game for Mayo in March 1976. Connacht Senior Football Championship
The Connacht Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition for the senior county teams of Connacht GAA. All of the counties of Connacht participate in the championship, as well as counties London and New York. The winning team receives the Nestor Cup. The Connacht Senior Football Championship is run on a knock-out basis in which once a team loses they are eliminated from the competition. A series of games are played during the summer months and the final is played in June or July. The winner progresses directly to the All-Ireland Super 8s, while losing teams progress to the All-Ireland Qualifiers (before 2001 the All-Ireland was a straight knock-out format meaning all losing teams were eliminated after a single defeat). Connacht Inter-provincial Gaelic Footballers
Connacht ( ; ga, Connachta or ), is one of the provinces of Ireland, in the west of Ireland. Until the ninth century it consisted of several independent major Gaelic kingdoms (Uí Fiachrach, Uí Briúin, Uí Maine, Conmhaícne, and Delbhna). Between the reigns of Conchobar mac Taidg Mór (died 882) and his descendant, Aedh mac Ruaidri Ó Conchobair (reigned 1228–33), it became a kingdom under the rule of the Uí Briúin Aí dynasty, whose ruling sept adopted the surname Ua Conchobair. At its greatest extent, it incorporated the often independent Kingdom of Breifne, as well as vassalage from the lordships of western Mide and west Leinster. Burrishoole Gaelic Footballers
Burrishoole () is one of the nine baronies of County Mayo in Ireland. It is named after the former Gaelic territory of Umhaill, which also included Murrisk barony, and roughly means the "borough of Umhaill". Legal context Baronies were created after the Norman invasion of Ireland as subdivisions of counties and were used for administration. While baronies continue to be officially defined units, they have been administratively obsolete since 1898. However, they continue to be used in land registration and specification such as in planning permissions. In some areas, usage of the barony name is common, while in other areas barony names have fallen out of use altogether. In many cases, a barony corresponds to an earlier Gaelic tuath which had submitted to the English Crown. Burrishoole is one of the nine baronies of County Mayo. 1969 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The 1969 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship was the 83rd staging of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament. The championship began on 4 May 1969 and ended on 28 September 1969. Down entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Cavan in the Ulster final. On 28 September 1969, Kerry won the championship following a 0-10 to 0-7 defeat of Offaly in the All-Ireland final. This was their 21st All-Ireland title, their first in seven championship seasons. Kerry's Mick O'Dwyer was the choice for Texaco Footballer of the Year. Mayo County Football Team
The Mayo county football team (;) represents Mayo in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Mayo GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Connacht Senior Football Championship and the National Football League. Mayo's home ground is MacHale Park, Castlebar. The team's manager is Kevin McStay. Mayo was the second Connacht county to win an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC), following Galway, but the first to appear in the final. The GAA Football Under-20 All-Ireland Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the EirGrid GAA Football Under-20 All-Ireland Championship) is an annual inter-county Gaelic football competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition for male players between the ages of 17 and 20 in Ireland. The championship was contested as the All-Ireland Under-21 Championship between 1964 and 2017 before changing to an under-20 age category from 2018. The final, usually held in August, serves as the culmination of a series of games played during the summer months, and the results determine which team receives the Clarke Cup.
