Willie Anderson (basketball)
Willie Lloyd Anderson Jr. (born January 8, 1966) is an American former professional basketball player. After attending the University of Georgia, he was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the 10th pick of the 1988 NBA draft. He played for the Spurs until the 1994–95 season when he was selected in the 1995 expansion draft by the Toronto Raptors. He also played for the New York Knicks and the Miami Heat for the next two seasons. Anderson then moved to Greece to play for Olympiacos and later for AEK Athens which he led to the Euroleague 1998 final. The next season, he signed for Maccabi Tel Aviv from Israel, but was waived at the beginning of the season. After signing, he declared that this would be his last season in professional basketball, and after being waived he did retire. The small forward (SF), also known as the three or swingman, is one of the five positions in a regulation basketball game. Small forwards are typically shorter, quicker, and leaner than power forwards and centers but taller, larger, and stronger than either of the guard positions. An expansion draft, in professional sports, occurs when a sports league decides to create one or more new expansion teams or franchises. This occurs mainly in North American sports. One of the ways of stocking the new team or teams is an expansion draft. Although how each league conducts them varies, and they vary from occasion to occasion, the system is usually something similar to the following: Each existing team is told it can "protect" a certain number of its existing contracted players by furnishing their names to the league office on or before a certain date. The expansion team(s) then are allowed to select players not on the protected lists in a manner somewhat similar to an entry draft. Basketball at the 1988 Summer Olympics was the twelfth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. It took place at the Jamsil Gymnasium in Seoul, South Korea from 17 September to 30 September 1988. The United States won the gold medal in the women's competition, repeating their performance from the 1984 tournament. In the men's tournament, the Soviet Union took home their second gold medal in the team's history for this event. In the team, Baltic basketballers were overrepresented: Sabonis, Chomičius, Kurtinaitis and Marčiulionis were Lithuanian, Miglinieks was Latvian, and Kaj Sokk was Estonian. The 1988 Summer Olympics (), officially known as the Games of the XXIV Olympiad () and commonly known as Seoul 1988 ( ko, 서울 1988, Seoul Cheon gubaek palsip-pal), was an international multi-sport event held from 17 September to 2 October 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. 159 nations were represented at the games by a total of 8,391 athletes (6,197 men and 2,194 women). 237 events were held and 27,221 volunteers helped to prepare the Olympics.
