William Wilfred Sullivan
Sir William Wilfred Sullivan (December 6, 1839 – September 30, 1920) was a Prince Edward Island journalist, politician and jurist, the fourth premier of Prince Edward Island. A native of Hope River, Sullivan had a career as an assistant editor at the ''Charlottetown Herald'' as well as a lawyer before being elected to the provincial legislature in 1872 as a Liberal MLA. A staunch Catholic, Sullivan became leader of the opposition in 1877 to the Protestant coalition government of Louis Henry Davies which had been formed to implement a public, secular school system that denied funding to Roman Catholic separate schools. Sullivan reorganised the Conservative Party and was asked by the lieutenant governor to become premier once Davies' coalition broke up and became unable to command a majority in the assembly. Louis Henry Davies
Sir Louis Henry Davies (May 4, 1845May 1, 1924) was a Canadian lawyer, businessman and politician, and judge from the province of Prince Edward Island. In a public career spanning six decades, he served as the third premier of Prince Edward Island, a federal Member of Parliament and Cabinet minister, and as both a Puisne Justice and the sixth Chief Justice of Canada. Early life and family Davies was born in Charlottetown, the son of Benjamin Davies and Kezia Attwood Watts. He attended Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown. In July, 1872, he married Susan Wiggins, a daughter of Dr. A. V. G. Wiggins. She was a member of the Humane Society, the Women's Canadian Historical Society, and similar organizations. John Collin Underhay
John Collier Underhay (15 January 1829 – 23 October 1919) was a farmer, land surveyor and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented 1st Kings from 1879 to 1882 and 2nd Kings from 1886 to 1893 in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island as a Prince Edward Island Liberal Party, Liberal and then a Prince Edward Island Conservative Party, Conservative member. He was born in Bay Fortune, Prince Edward Island, the son of William Underhay and Marianne Withers. In 1856, he married Rosaline, the daughter of James Craswell, a member of the province's Legislative Council. Underhay was a justice of the peace and also served as postmaster at Grand River, Prince Edward Island, Grand River. The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. George Coles was its dominant figure in its first decades. Prince Edward Island (PEI; ) is one of the thirteen Provinces and territories of Canada, provinces and territories of Canada. St. Dunstan's University (SDU) is a former university which was located on the northern outskirts of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. SDU merged with Prince of Wales College (PWC) in 1969 to form the University of Prince Edward Island. St. Dunstan's College was founded by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlottetown on January 15, 1855 as a seminary which trained young men for the Catholic clergy. The St. Andrew's College, founded in 1831, was its predecessor. By the mid-20th century, the college had expanded into a small liberal arts university. Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855. It was the site of the famous Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian and Maritime statesmen to discuss the proposed Maritime Union.
