William Whyte (banker)
Sir William Whyte FRSE (1878–1945) was a 20th-century Scottish banker who served as President of the Institute of Bankers in Scotland from 1940 to 1942. He was one of the instigators of the Royal Bank of Scotland's 20th century expansion programme. Life He was born in Kinross on 14 August 1878. In September 1893 he was apprenticed as a banker at the Royal Bank of Scotland in Kinross. He later transferred to the Ayr branch before becoming the accountant at the Saltcoats branch. In February 1899 he made an important transfer the bank's London branch. The London branch was often the chosen area for future senior staff. Staying at the London branch he became Accountant in 1918 and became Joint Manager in 1921. He became sole Manager in January 1924. In February 1929 he returned to Scotland as Deputy General Manager at the Royal Bank's Headquarters at Dundas House in Edinburgh. William T. Whyte (April 10, 1860 – May 16, 1911) was an American pre-Negro league pitcher in the late 1800s. A native of Bristol, Rhode Island, Whyte spent most of his professional career with the Cuban Giants. In 1890, he posted an 11–5 record with a 3.02 ERA for the York Monarchs. Whyte died in Trenton, New Jersey Trenton is the capital city of the U.S. state of New Jersey and the county seat of Mercer County. Sir William Whyte (September 15, 1843 – April 14, 1914) was a Canadian railway executive. Born in Charlestown, Scotland, the son of William Whyte and Christina Methven, Whyte attended public school in Charlestown before becoming a junior clerk in the office of the factor of Lord Elgin's estate. In 1862, he became a station agent on the West of Fife Railway until he emigrated to Canada in 1863. He soon joined the Grand Trunk Railway as a brakeman and stayed with the railway for the next twenty years, finally reaching the position of superintendent. In 1882, he resigned from the Grand Trunk Railway to become general superintendent of the Credit Valley Railway, which in 1883 became a portion of the Ontario and Quebec division of the Canadian Pacific Railway. William Foote Whyte (June 27, 1914 – July 16, 2000) was an American sociologist chiefly known for his ethnographic study in urban sociology, '' Street Corner Society''. A pioneer in participant observation, he lived for four years in an Italian community in Boston while a Junior Fellow at Harvard researching social relations of street gangs in Boston's North End. Early life Whyte, from an upper-middle-class background, showed an early interest in writing, economics and social reform. After graduating from Swarthmore College, he was selected for the Junior Fellows program, where his landmark research was done. William Pinkney Whyte (August 9, 1824March 17, 1908), a member of the United States Democratic Party, was a politician who served the State of Maryland as a State Delegate, the State Comptroller, a United States Senator, the 35th Governor, the Mayor of Baltimore, Maryland, and the State Attorney General.
