William White (Secretary Of State)
William White (1762–1811) was the second North Carolina Secretary of State, serving from 1798 until 1811. White represented Lenoir County in the state legislature, first in the North Carolina House of Commons and then in the North Carolina Senate, from the county's creation in 1792 until the legislature appointed him Secretary of State in 1798. The same year he built the White-Holman House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. He was served as Intendant of Police (mayor) of Raleigh from 1803-1806. In 1811, White died in office. The legislature elected his former clerk, William Hill, to succeed him. James Glasgow (c. 1735 – November 17, 1819) served as the first North Carolina Secretary of State, from 1777 to 1798. Biography Early life James Glasgow, the son of a Scottish minister, Reverend James Patrick Glasgow and his wife, Martha Jones, of Cecil County, Maryland. He was born in the Colony of Maryland and educated at the College of William & Mary. After graduation he served as an accounting and corresponding clerk for an import-export house in Suffolk, Virginia. Career He was an officer in the American Revolutionary War in North Carolina, and in December 1776, was rewarded by the last of the state's provincial congresses with the office of Secretary of State. Richard Caswell
Richard Caswell (August 3, 1729November 10, 1789) was an American politician and lawyer who served as the first and fifth governor of the state of North Carolina from 1776 to 1780 and from 1785 to 1787. He also served as a senior officer of militia in the Southern Theater of the American Revolutionary War. As a delegate to the First Continental Congress he was a signatory of the 1774 Continental Association. Early life Caswell was born on August 3, 1729, in Harford County (present-day Baltimore), Maryland; one of eleven children born to Richard and Christian () Caswell. The Caswells moved to New Bern, North Carolina, in 1745. He was appointed deputy surveyor for the province in 1750.
