William Whitaker (theologian)
William Whitaker (1548 – 4 December 1595) was a prominent Protestant Calvinistic Anglican churchman, academic, and theologian. He was Master of St. John's College, Cambridge, and a leading divine in the university in the latter half of the sixteenth century. His uncle was Alexander Nowell, the Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral and catechist. Early life and education He was born at Holme, near Burnley, Lancashire, in 1548, being the third son of Thomas Whitaker of that place, by Elizabeth his wife, daughter of John Nowell, esq., of Read, and sister of Alexander Nowell, dean of St Paul's." After receiving the rudiments of learning at his native parish school, he was sent by his uncle, Alexander Nowell, to St Paul's School in London. William Whitaker (Puritan Ejected Minister)
William Whitaker (1629–1672) was an English Puritan ejected minister. Life The son of Jeremiah Whitaker, he was born at Oakham, Rutland. Aged 14 he was admitted a member of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he became noted as a linguist. He took the degree of B.A. in 1642. Two years later he was admitted a Fellow of Queens' College, Cambridge, and in 1646 he graduated M.A. there.. In 1652 he took orders and became minister of Hornchurch, Essex. He succeeded his father in the living of St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, in 1654. After the Restoration of 1660 he was one of the London ministers who drew up and presented to the king the memorial against the Act of Uniformity 1662. After his ejectment he gathered a private congregation, which assembled in a small meeting-house in Long Walk, Bermondsey. William Whitaker (geologist)
William Whitaker (4 May 1836 in London – 15 January 1925 in Croydon) was a British geologist. Early life He was educated at St Albans School and University College, London, where he gained a degree in chemistry in 1855. Career He became a geologist, specializing initially in water surveying and mapping. His thorough research, wide knowledge, and his numerous publications, especially his ''The Geology of London and of Part of the Thames Valley'' (1889) has led some to call him “the father of English hydrogeology”. He retired in 1896 but continued to work as a water engineer. Honours He was elected fellow of the Geological Society in 1859, and FRS in 1883. He was president of numerous societies, including both the Geologists’ Association and the Geological Society, and was a recipient of the latter’s Murchison Medal in 1886 and Wollaston Medal in 1923. William Whitaker (MP)
William Whitaker (c. 1580 – 1646) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1640 to 1646. He was the son of Henry Whitaker, the MP for Westbury in 1586. Whitaker attended Middle Temple and was appointed recorder of Shaftesbury in 1627. In 1624 he had entered Parliament as member for Shaftesbury and was re-elected in 1625. In 1640, Whitaker was again elected for Shaftesbury in the Short Parliament in April and the Long Parliament in November, sitting until his death in 1646. In 1646 Whitaker helped establish Shaftesbury Grammar School Shaftesbury School is a coeducational secondary day and boarding school located in Shaftesbury in the English county of Dorset. William Whitaker (born 26 July 1989) is an English show jumper from Yorkshire. Whitaker has represented Britain at show jumping. Whitaker is from a dynasty of show jumpers and horse trainers including his uncles Michael and John Whitaker. In 2016 William Whitaker became the third member of his family, after uncles John and Michael, to win the British Jumping Derby at All England Jumping Course at Hickstead, having finished third and second in the previous years events. Early life and education Whitaker graduated from Hobart College with a Bachelor's degree degree in American history.
