William Whitaker (MP)
William Whitaker (c. 1580 – 1646) was an English lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1640 to 1646. He was the son of Henry Whitaker, the MP for Westbury in 1586. Whitaker attended Middle Temple and was appointed recorder of Shaftesbury in 1627. In 1624 he had entered Parliament as member for Shaftesbury and was re-elected in 1625. In 1640, Whitaker was again elected for Shaftesbury in the Short Parliament in April and the Long Parliament in November, sitting until his death in 1646. In 1646 Whitaker helped establish Shaftesbury Grammar School Shaftesbury School is a coeducational secondary day and boarding school located in Shaftesbury in the English county of Dorset. The House of Commons of England was the lower house of the Parliament of England (which incorporated Wales) from its development in the 14th century to the union of England and Scotland in 1707, when it was replaced by the House of Commons of Great Britain after the 1707 Act of Union was passed in both the English and Scottish parliaments at the time. In 1801, with the union of Great Britain and Republic of Ireland, Ireland, that house was in turn replaced by the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Origins The Parliament of England developed from the Magnum Concilium that advised the English monarch in medieval times. This royal council, meeting for short periods, included ecclesiastics, noblemen, and representatives of the county, counties (known as "knights of the shire"). Samuel Turner (Royalist)
Samuel Turner (died c. 1647) was an English physician and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1625 and 1644. He fought on the Royalist side during the English Civil War. Turner was the elder son of the physician and Puritan Member of Parliament Peter Turner, and was the brother of the mathematician Peter Turner. He was educated at St Mary Hall, Oxford being awarded BA in 1602 and at St Alban Hall, Oxford being awarded MA in 1604. He was made a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Padua in 1611. In 1625 Turner was elected Member of Parliament for Shaftesbury. He immediately made himself prominent with attacks on the Duke of Buckingham, calling him ''"the cause of all their grievances"'' and declaring that it was unfit that he should hold so many great offices. John Bingham (MP)
John Bingham (1613–1673) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1645 and 1659. He served in the Parliamentary army in the English Civil War. Bingham was the son of Richard Bingham, of Bingham's Melcombe, Dorset, and his wife Jane Hopton, daughter of Sir Arthur Hopton. He matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford, on 9 December 1631, aged 18. He was a student of the Middle Temple in 1632. In the Civil War, Bingham was colonel of a regiment of the parliamentary army and Bingham's Melcombe was used as the headquarters of the local parliamentary forces. He was governor of Poole, and took part in the siege of Corfe Castle. He was elected Member of Parliament for Shaftesbury in 1645 in the Long Parliament and survived Pride's Purge to serve in the Rump Parliament. Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon (18 February 16099 December 1674), was an English statesman, lawyer, diplomat and historian who served as chief advisor to Charles I during the First English Civil War, and Lord Chancellor to Charles II from 1660 to 1667. Hyde largely avoided involvement in the political disputes of the 1630s until elected to the Long Parliament in November 1640. Like many moderates, he felt attempts by Charles to rule without Parliament had gone too far but by 1642 felt its leaders were, in turn, seeking too much power. A devout believer in an Episcopalian Church of England, his opposition to Puritan attempts to reform it drove much of his policy over the next two decades. Westbury was a United Kingdom constituencies, parliamentary constituency in Wiltshire from 1449 to 2010. It was represented in the House of Commons of England until 1707, and then in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800, and finally in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 until 2010. Until 1885, it was a parliamentary borough, returning two Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Members of Parliament (MPs) until 1832 and only one from 1832 to 1885. The parliamentary borough was abolished in 1885, when the name was transferred to a county constituency returning one MP.
