William Westley Richards
William Westley Richards (24 November 1789 – 11 September 1865) was a British firearms manufacturer and founder of Westley Richards. Richards was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England to Theophilus Richards and Mary Bingham. He married his first wife, Ann Barlow in 1813. They had six children: Westley, Emma, Caroline, Edward Harding, Ellen, and Mary Anne. William and Ann divorced before 1823. He married his second wife, Harriett Seale (1793–1865) on 18 January 1823 at St Pancras Old Church, London. He had three children by his second marriage, Charles, George Seale, and William. William died 11 September 1865 at Hall Hill, Edgbaston, Warwickshire. In 1812, at the age of 22, he established the Westley Richards gunmaking business in Birmingham, which still bears his name. His family background had been in fine jewellery, cutlery and the gun trade. He coined the motto, "to be the maker of as good a gun as can be made" which is still used. Gunsmith
A gunsmith is a person who repairs, modifies, designs, or builds guns. The occupation differs from an armorer, who usually replaces only worn parts in standard firearms. Gunsmiths do modifications and changes to a firearm that may require a very high level of craftsmanship, requiring the skills of a top-level machinist, a very skilled woodworker, and even an engineer. Gunsmiths perform factory-level repairs and renovations to restore a well-used or deteriorated firearms to new condition. They may make alterations to adapt sporting guns to better fit the individual shooter that may require extensive modifications to the firearm's stocks and metal parts. William Bishop (1797–1871)
William Bishop (1797 – 16 March 1871) nicknamed as the Bishop of Bond Street was a gun dealer on New Bond Street, London, who served as an agent for the gunsmith Westley Richards. He was responsible for popularizing guns as a very successful gun seller and a promoter of sport shooting. Biography Bishop was born in Ealing and became a goldsmith and later served as an agent for Westley Richards. His shop which was at 170 Bond Street grew into a well-known establishment. Known for wearing a top hat indoors and for his charismatic manners he came to be called the "Bishop of Bond Street". George Teasdale-Buckell described him as: "A large and roomy man, old Bishop, sitting in front of the old white mantelpiece … his gouty leg up on a chair before him.
