William Walsh (archbishop Of Halifax)
William Walsh, (7 November 1804 – 11 August 1858), was an archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Halifax. He was born in Waterford, County Waterford, Republic of Ireland and died in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Biography Walsh studied at St. John's College, Waterford and Maynooth College and was ordained in Waterford. Following ordination he ministered in Dublin. Walsh became bishop of Halifax in 1845 and in 1852, was appointed archbishop of an expanded ecclesiastical province of Nova Scotia, also designated as Halifax. John Le Marchant (British Army Officer, Born 1803)
Lieutenant General Sir John Gaspard Le Marchant (1803–1874) was a British Army officer and governor of Newfoundland from 1847 to 1852. He later became the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia (1852–1858) and Governor of Malta (1858–1864). Biography Le Marchant was the son of Major-General John Le Marchant and the younger brother of Sir Denis Le Marchant, 1st Baronet, and was educated at High Wycombe Royal Grammar School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. In 1820, at the age of seventeen, he was commissioned into the 10th Foot as an ensign. In 1821 he transferred to the 57th Foot as a lieutenant and later transferred to the 98th Foot, in which he was promoted major. In 1835 he became adjutant-general of the British Auxiliary Legion in Spain with the rank of brigadier-general. Pope Pius IX ( it, Pio IX, ''Pio Nono''; born Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti; 13 May 1792 – 7 February 1878) was head of the Catholic Church from 1846 to 1878, the longest verified papal reign. He was notable for convoking the First Vatican Council in 1868 and for permanently losing control of the Papal States in 1870 to the Kingdom of Italy. Thereafter he refused to leave Vatican City, declaring himself a " prisoner of the Vatican". At the time of his election, he was seen as a champion of liberalism and reform, but the Revolutions of 1848 decisively reversed his policies. William Fraser (Canadian Bishop)
William Fraser (1778 or 1779 Strathglass, Inverness-shire Scotland – October 4, 1851 Arichat, Nova Scotia, Canada) was a Canadian Roman Catholic priest and the first Bishop of Halifax in Nova Scotia from 1842 to July 20, 1845. He was Bishop of Arichat from September 22, 1844 (now the Diocese of Antigonish). The difference in the dates is due to the splitting of the diocese into two dioceses effective September 22, 1844, and Fraser remaining Bishop of Halifax until such time that William Walsh took formal possession of the Diocese of Halifax.
