Turner (potters)
The Turner family of Pottery, potters was active in Staffordshire, England 1756-1829. Their manufactures have been compared favourably with, and sometimes confused with, those of Josiah Wedgwood and Sons. Josiah Wedgwood was both a friend and a commercial rival of John Turner the elder, the first notable potter in the family. The Turner factory, like Wedgwood, mostly made fine earthenwares and stonewares but, briefly and not very successfully, made hard-paste porcelain themselves. John Turner the Elder was also an original partner in the New Hall porcelain factory, though not associated with the factory for long. Many of the most interesting wares from the Turner factory are unglazed, in caneware, jasperware and basalt ware. Geoffrey Godden uses the term "Turner stoneware" for "a refined earthenware being a cross between caneware and stoneware" (bearing in mind that many classify caneware as stoneware). William Turner (1509/10 – 13 July 1568) was an English divine and reformer, a physician and a natural historian. He has been called "The father of English botany."Samson, Alexander. William Turner (16 November 1901 – 1989) was an English, retired professional footballer who played mainly as a midfielder or inside forward. He made 281 League appearances for Crystal Palace scoring 36 goals. He also played non-league football for Bromsgrove Rovers and Worcester City F.C. Playing career Turner began his career with Bromsgrove Rovers but had already become an England schoolboy international before signing for the club. He signed for Crystal Palace on 4 May 1925 and became a regular in the side the following season. William Turner (22 December 1894 – 1970) was an English footballer who played as a half back with Southampton, Bury and Queens Park Rangers in the 1920s. Football career Turner was born in South Moor, Stanley, County Durham and played his early football with various clubs in North East England, including Dipton United, Scotswood and Leadgate Park. Willie Turner (born October 14, 1948) is an American former sprinter. Willie resides in his home town of Yakima, Washington, where he has coached sprinting at A.C. Davis High School for many years. He is greatly loved by the local community and works part-time helping middle school children as a security guard for Wilson Middle School. Willie at one time in his illustrious carrier earned the title, for a brief period, as "Fastest Man Alive" for his efforts in the 100, 200, and 4x1 sprints. Among his many accomplishments he has won a silver medal in the 100m dash for the 1967 Pan American games. William H. Turner Jr. (February 29, 1940 – December 31, 2021) was an American Thoroughbred flat racing trainer best known for winning the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing in 1977 with Seattle Slew. Turner maintained a public training stable and bloodstock consulting services, operating mainly in New York, Florida, and the Mid-Atlantic region. At the time of his retirement he had been training horses competing on the New York Racing Association circuit.
