William Townsend (mayor)
William Townsend (1821 – 25 October 1882) was a leading auctioneer, Mayor of Adelaide from 1864 to 1866, and a South Australian politician. In 1874 he established an institution for deaf and blind children which was named Townsend House. Early years Townsend was born in the London Borough of Southwark, and worked assisting his brother, a potato salesman, and subsequently as a clerk. He married Emma Slade at St Pancras on 25 December 1852, and soon after set sail for Adelaide. He, his wife and child arrived in South Australia aboard the Dutch ship ''Fop Smit'' on 2 August 1853. Emma died soon after arrival. He subsequently married Jane Hooper. Migration to South Australia At first he was employed as a boot salesman, and subsequently opened a business as a boot-maker. William Townsend (cricketer)
William Henry Townsend (17 February 1821 – 26 February 1891) was an English first-class cricketer and barrister. The son of Robert Townsend, he was born at Mansfield in February 1821. He later studied at Lincoln College, Oxford where he played first-class cricket for Oxford University. He made his first-class debut against Cambridge University in The University Match of 1842. He made three further first-class appearances for Oxford, making a further appearance in 1842 and two appearances in 1843. His four first-class wickets all came in one match, against the Marylebone Cricket Club in 1842 at Lord's. A student of Lincoln's Inn, he was called to the bar as a barrister in November 1847. William Cameron Townsend (July 9, 1896 – April 23, 1982) was an American Christian missionary-linguist who founded Wycliffe Bible Translators and the Summer Institute of Linguistics (now SIL International), both of which emphasized translation of the Bible into minority languages and the development of literacy and bilingual education programs. William Charles Townsend (1803–1850) was an English barrister, known as a historical and legal writer. Life He was the second son of William Townsend of Walton, Lancashire, and matriculated at The Queen's College, Oxford, on 4 July 1820, graduating B.A. in 1824 and M.A. in 1827. On 25 November 1828 he was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn. Townsend first attached himself to the northern circuit, and then practised at the Cheshire and Manchester assizes. Later he obtained a practice on the North Wales circuit. In 1833 he was elected recorder of Macclesfield. In March 1850 he was appointed a queen's counsel, and in the same year became a bencher of Lincoln's Inn. William George Paulson Townsend (1868–1941) was an English artist, designer, writer and editor. Early life Born in Derby in 1868, Townsend's father was a third generation coachbuilder and designer. His younger brother, Ernest Townsend rose to prominence as an artist. Career and works William pursued a career as an art teacher, becoming teacher of drawing, government examiner of art and master of design at the Royal School of Needlework. Some of his wallpaper designs and some watercolour copies of Botticelli works survive in the collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. William H. Townsend (July 30, 1914 – September 15, 2005) was an American politician, civil rights activist, and optometrist who was one of the first African Americans to serve in the Arkansas State Legislature since the Reconstruction era. He was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives as a Democrat representing Little Rock in 1972 and went on to serve twelve terms in office until 1997. Early life and education Townsend was born on July 30, 1914, in West Point, Mississippi, and raised in Earle, Arkansas. He earned a BS in agriculture from the Tuskegee Institute in 1941. He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II and while serving overseas studied at the University of Nottingham. He earned a Purple Heart after sustaining a shrapnel wound to his knee.
