William Spence
William Guthrie Spence (7 August 1846 – 13 December 1926), was an Australian trade union leader and politician, played a leading role in the formation of both Australia's largest union, the Australian Workers' Union, and the Australian Labor Party. Early life Spence was born on the island of Eday in the Orkney Islands, Scotland and migrated to Australia with his family as age six. He had no formal education and worked as a farm labourer in the Wimmera district of Victoria from the age of 13. Later he acquired a gold-mining licence and worked for various mining companies. In 1871 he married Ann Jane Savage. In 1874, Spence was one of a number of militant mine-workers who formed the Amalgamated Miners' Association of Victoria, and he became the union's general secretary in 1882. He led the union into mergers with similar unions in the other Australian colonies, forming the Amalgamated Miners' Association of Australasia. William Spence (burgess)
William Spence (sometimes shown as Spense) was an early Colony of Virginia, Virginia colonist on Jamestown Island. He was member of the first assembly of the Virginia House of Burgesses in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619. Spence became an ensign in the local militia and is thus sometimes identified as Ensign William Spence or Ensign Spence. He was an early farmer on Jamestown Island, a tobacco taster and landowner at College Creek#17th century: anchoring the palisade, Archer's Hope. William Spence (entomologist)
William Spence (c.1783 – 6 January 1860) was a British economist and entomologist. Spence was born in Bishop Burton in the East Riding of Yorkshire, the oldest of four children of farmer Robert Spence. He was apprenticed to Russian merchants and shipowners Carhill, Greenwood & Co. but little else is known about his early life except that at the age of ten he was in the care of a clergyman who taught him botany. He married Elizabeth Blundell in Hull on 30 June 1804 and very soon supported her brother Henry to set up the highly successful oil and colour company Blundell Spence. He was the father of artist and art dealer William Blundell Spence. He became interested in entomology when he was 22 and immediately began a correspondence with leading entomologist William Kirby. William Spence (mathematician)
William Spence (born 31 July 1777 in Greenock, Scotland – died 22 May 1815 in Glasgow, Scotland) was a Scottish mathematician who published works on the fields of logarithmic functions, algebraic equations and their relation to integral and differential calculus respectively. Early life, family, and personal life Spence was the second son to Ninian Spence and his wife Sarah Townsend. Ninian Spence ran a coppersmith business, and the Spence family were a prominent family in Greenock at the time. From an early age, Spence was characterised as having a docile and reasonable nature, with him being mature for his age. At school he formed a life-long friendship with John Galt, who documented much of his life and his works posthumously. Despite having received a formal education until he was a teenager, Spence never attended university, instead he moved to Glasgow where he lodged with a friend of his fathers, learning the skills of a manufacturer. William Spence (sculptor)
William Spence (1793–1849) was an early 19th century British sculptor. Life He was born in Chester in 1793 and showed artistic talent at an early age. He was sent to Liverpool to study drawing and carving under a Mr Pether. In Liverpool he met and befriended John Gibson who was working nearby at Samuel Francey's yard and got Spence a job in this yard. Spence went into partnership with Francey in 1819. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1821 to 1844. He was given the post of Professor of Drawing at Liverpool Academy of Arts. He died in Liverpool in 1849. Sussex (UK Parliament Constituency)
Sussex was a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of England then of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1832. It was represented by two Knights of the Shire, elected by the bloc vote system. Under the Reform Act 1832 the constituency was split into two two-member divisions, for Parliamentary purposes, at the 1832 general election. The county was then represented by the East Sussex and West Sussex divisions. Boundaries The constituency comprised the whole historic county of Sussex. William Spence (1806 - 22 June 1883) was an architect based in Glasgow. Background He was born in 1806 at Carstairs, the second son of John Spence (1775-1849) (shoemaker) and Margaret Kane (1778-1820). He married Margaret Field (1824-1879) on 12 December 1843 at Barony, Lanark and they had five children: *Marion Spence (b. 1847) *John William Spence (b. 1854) *Henry Field Spence (b. 1856) *Margaret B Spence (b. 1858) *Jane Spence He died on 22 June 1883 at Helensburgh, Argyll and Bute. William Blundell Spence (13 January 1814 – 23 January 1900) was an English painter and art dealer. Born in Drypool, Yorkshire, to noted entomologist William Spence and his wife Elizabeth Blundell, he spent the years 1826-1832 travelling abroad with his parents. In 1836 he settled in Florence, Italy, where he spent the rest of his life. As a painter, he specialized, mainly painting Alpine landscapes. He was a founding partner of Spence & Reid, which manufactured clipper ships, established an import/export firm at Pratt Street’s Old Bowley’s Wharf, and founded The Mercantile Trust and Deposit Company.
