William Shew (farmer-legislator)
William Shew (1805 – April 12, 1883) was a farmer and businessman from Oak Creek, Wisconsin and Cordova, Illinois who served multiple terms in the Wisconsin Territory House of Representatives representing Milwaukee County, and was Speaker of the House of that body during the first (1847) session of the 5th Wisconsin Territorial Assembly, as well as holding various local government posts. Background Shew was born 1805 near Rochester, New York in 1805, moved with parents to Dayton, Ohio and lived with them "until manhood" (as his obituary phrased it), when he married Elizabeth Robbe. He settled with her in Monroe, Michigan Territory and went into business there. In 1836, they moved to Milwaukee County in Wisconsin Territory, where he acquired government land and took up farming in Oak Creek. Oak Creek is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Located in Milwaukee County, it sits on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan and is located immediately south of Milwaukee. Princeton is a city in Scott County, Iowa, United States. The population was 923 at the time of the 2020 census. History The first known settlers in Princeton Township were brothers Giles and Haswell Pineo, ''circa'' 1836. Wisconsin State Assembly
The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, elected during the fall elections. If a vacancy occurs in an Assembly seat between elections, it may be filled only by a special election. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. Franklin is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. It is a suburb of Milwaukee with a population of 36,816 as of the 2020 census. History On December 20, 1839, the south portion of the Town of Kinnikinick was split off to form the town of Franklin. The town consisted of a 36-square-mile area that was originally covered with heavy timber, which was mostly hardwoods such as hickory, walnut, and butternut. Most of the town's drainage was delivered by the Root River and there was an abundance of wildlife including bears, deer, and wolves. As of the 1840 census, the population of the Town of Franklin was 248. The name "Franklin" was given in homage to Benjamin Franklin. Whig Party (United States)
The Whig Party was a political party in the United States during the middle of the 19th century. Alongside the slightly larger Democratic Party, it was one of the two major parties in the United States between the late 1830s and the early 1850s as part of the Second Party System. The Fourth Legislative Assembly of the Wisconsin Territory convened from , to , from , to , from , to , and from , to , in regular session. The first session of this Legislative Assembly was effected by a dispute with the Governor over whether or not the session was legally sanctioned by Congress. The session was adjourned twice, and finally came back into session on the governor's request in March 1843, when they finished their business.
