William Saunders (Florida Politician)
William U. Saunders (1835 - September 1, 1883) was a barber, soldier, politician, and lawyer who represented Gadsden County, Florida, in the Florida Legislature during the Reconstruction era. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He served in the United States Colored Infantry from 1863-1866.Florida's Black Public Officials by Canter Brown Jr. pages 122, 123. He was a delegate from Gadsden County to the 1868 Constitutional Convention of Florida despite having been in the county only a few days in his life, according to one account. He had been a barber in Illinois or Maryland. He was described as an eloquent speaker. In 1948 he was described as a Northern Radical Republican. He traveled the state rallying Black voters. Historian T. D. Allman wrote that racist revisionists tried to recast him as mulatto to deny his being a black man. Gadsden County is a county located in the panhandle of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 43,826. Its county seat is Quincy. Gadsden County is included in the Tallahassee, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gadsden County is the only majority (over 50%) African-American county in Florida. History Gadsden County was created in 1823. It was named for James Gadsden of South Carolina, who served as Andrew Jackson's aide-de-camp in Florida in 1818. Gadsden County is historically known for its tobacco crop which is obsolete today. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (2.3%) is water. Gadsden County is part of the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area.
