William Ronald Cumming
William Ronald Cumming (25 January 1886 – 30 October 1951) was an Australian politician. He was born at Mount Fyans near Mortlake to grazier William Burrow Cumming and Adeline Catherine Affleck. He attended Geelong Grammar School and served with the 39th Battalion during World War I; he was awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre. In 1914 he married Ava Irene Maidment Henty, with whom he had a son and three daughters; he would later marry Nora Lillian Crowe on 9 March 1944. On his return from the war he managed his father's property at Mount Fyans, which was sold in 1933. Cumming purchased land at Camperdown. He served on Mortlake Shire Council from 1924 to 1947, as president from 1932 to 1933. In 1935 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the United Australia Party member for Hampden. A supporter of Ian Macfarlan, he was Minister of Agriculture in the stop-gap Macfarlan Ministry of 1945, but was defeated at the subsequent election. In 1949 he moved to Pe ... Mortlake, Victoria
Mortlake is a town in the Western District of Victoria, Australia on the Hamilton Highway, north-east of Warrnambool. It is in the Shire of Moyne local government area and the federal Division of Wannon. At the 2001 census, Mortlake had a population of 941, rising to 996 in 2006, and to 1,073 in 2011. Mortlake is situated at the foot of a dormant volcano, Mount Shadwell, formed 25,000 years ago. It is believed that it last erupted about 5,000 years ago. Self-proclaimed as the Olivine capital of Australia, large ejected rocks from Mt Shadwell are called volcanic bombs. They are often egg shaped because they cooled as they were being thrown through the air. These bombs can contain olivine, a green crystal also known as peridot, the birthstone for August. Peterborough, Victoria
Peterborough () is a town on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, approximately three hours' drive from Melbourne. The town is situated on land to the west side of the mouth of the Curdies River. History Aboriginal peoples occupied the area for thousands of years before European settlement. In 1845 Dr Daniel Curdie made the difficult journey from his homestead at Tandarook to follow the river to its mouth. He named the area Peterborough after his friend Dr Peter Reid of Richmond. The town was believed to have been founded when the schooner '' SS Schomberg'' was wrecked in the middle of the 19th century, though the town was not sufficiently populated to justify a post office until 10 April 1890. It has since become a fishing and holiday village. There are two public tennis courts and beaches, and a nine-hole golf course at the Peterborough Golf Club on Schomberg Road. Sir (Thomas) Chester Manifold (13 May 1897 – 6 January 1979) was prominent member of the Victorian Racing community as a successful racehorse owner and breeder. He also spent 6 years as an Victorian politician. He was born in Camperdown to James Chester Manifold and Lilian Eva Curle. Known by his middle name (Chester).
