William Rae (firefighter)
William Rae (1869 – 27 November 1904) was a Scottish firefighter who served in the Glasgow Fire Brigade. Rae responded to tackle a fire at the North British Railway Company, Glasgow on 24 November 1904 where he was seriously injured by an exploding boiler. He died of his injuries three days later. Rae was memorialized in Scottish Fire and Rescue Service's ''Firefighters' Heritage Trail'' where one of the twelve plaques is dedicated to him. Personal life Rae was born in 1869. At the time of his death in 1904 he was married and had four children; the oldest child was 10 years old. Fire fighting career Rae, a carpenter by trade, joined the fire service in November 1891 and rose through the rank to become a merit class fireman. Glasgow Necropolis
The Glasgow Necropolis is a Victorian cemetery in Glasgow, Scotland. It is on a low but very prominent hill to the east of Glasgow Cathedral (St. Mungo's Cathedral). Fifty thousand individuals have been buried here. Typical for the period, only a small percentage are named on monuments and not every grave has a stone. Approximately 3,500 monuments exist here. Background Following the creation of Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris a wave of pressure began for cemeteries in Britain. This required a change in the law to allow burial for profit. Previously the parish church held responsibility for burying the dead but there was a growing need for an alternative. Glasgow was one of the first to join this campaign, having a growing population, with fewer and fewer attending church. Led by Lord Provost James Ewing of Strathleven, the planning of the cemetery was started by the Merchants' House of Glasgow in 1831, in anticipation of a change in the law. Founding of the city The present site of Glasgow has been settled since prehistoric times, being the furthest downstream fording point of the River Clyde, at its confluence with the Molendinar Burn. The Romans built outposts in the area and constructed the Antonine Wall to keep Roman Britannia separate from Celtic and Pictish Caledonia. Items from the wall, such as altars from Roman forts, including Balmuildy, can be seen in the Hunterian Museum. After the Romans withdrew from Caledonia, the village was part of the large Kingdom of Strathclyde, whose capital was at Dumbarton downstream.
