William R. Walker (architect)
William R. Walker (April 14, 1830 – March 11, 1905) was an American architect from Providence, Rhode Island, who was later the senior partner of William R. Walker & Son. Early life Major-General William Russell Walker was born on April 14, 1830, in a part of Seekonk, Massachusetts that is presently part of East Providence, Rhode Island, to Alfred and Huldah Walker. He attended the public schools, and graduated from the Seekonk Classical Seminary in 1846. For three years he was a builder's apprentice in Providence, and studied architectural drawing at Scholfield's Commercial College in his free time. In 1850 he went to Augusta, Georgia, but returned to Pawtucket the following year, where he would live for the rest of his life. In 1861 he was commissioned first lieutenant of Company E of the 1st Rhode Island Detached Militia. The regiment mustered out three months later in August.Grieve, Robert. Seekonk, Massachusetts
Seekonk is a town in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States, on the Massachusetts border with Rhode Island. It was incorporated in 1812 from the western half of Rehoboth. The population was 15,531 at the 2020 census. Until 1862, the town of Seekonk also included what is now the City of East Providence, Rhode Island, as well as the section of the City of Pawtucket, Rhode Island east of the Blackstone River. The land in the western half of the town was given to Rhode Island by the United States Supreme Court as part of a longstanding boundary dispute with Massachusetts. Oakland Beach, Rhode Island
Oakland Beach is a neighborhood and beach located in the South Central area of Warwick, Rhode Island, on Greenwich Bay, a tributary of Narragansett Bay. In the late 1800s, Oakland Beach was the site of the camp ground for the six day annual training encampment of the Rhode Island Militia. Around 1895 the encampment was moved to a larger and better equipped facility at Quonset Point. This densely populated community of small cottages was developed after World War I as a summer colony, largely for nearby Providence's middle-class Irish, Greek and Italian communities. Clouds Hill (Warwick, Rhode Island)
Clouds Hill is a historic house museum at 4157 Post Road in Warwick, Rhode Island. It is located on the estate formerly known as Cedar Hill, a country estate built 1871-77 as a wedding present for Elizabeth Ives Slater Reed by her father, William S. Slater. The main mansion house is a large Gothic Revival structure, designed by noted Providence, Rhode Island, Providence architect William R. Walker (architect), William R. Walker, and is one of his few surviving large-scale residential designs. Both the Slaters and Reeds were leading industrial textile magnates in Rhode Island, and the property contains many examples of high quality Victorian-era workmanship, including a distinctive Egyptian-themed room. The estate was occupied by four generations of Reed descendants, and was converted to a museum in 2004. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. The Customhouse Historic District is a historic district encompassing fifteen historic buildings in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. The district is bounded by Westminster, Exchange, Dyer, Pine, and Peck Streets, and includes eight buildings associated with the important functions of the business center Providence became in the mid-to-late 19th century. Isaac Davis House
The Isaac Davis House is an historic house at 1 Oak Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was built in 1870-72 for Isaac Davis (1799-1883), a prominent local lawyer and banker, and is a fine example of Italianate architecture in brick. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is now home to the private Worcester Club. Description and history The Isaac Davis House stands in a mixed commercial-residential area west of downtown Worcester, at the northwest corner of Elm and Oak Streets. It is a three-story masonry structure, built primarily out of red brick with brownstone trim, and covered by a low-pitch hip roof. The roof has a modillioned and dentilled cornice, and two similar street-facing main facades.
