William Pickering (governor)
William Pickering (March 15, 1798 – April 22, 1873) was an English-born American politician who served the fifth governor of Washington territory, from 1862 to 1866. He is the member of the Republican Party. Biography Pickering was born in Yorkshire, England. He graduated from Oxford University in 1820. The following year he moved to Edwards County, Illinois, acquiring property and involving himself in various businesses in the area of Albion, Illinois. On 9 March 1824 in Albion he married Martha Flower (1800–1838), daughter of Richard Flower and sister of Edward Fordham Flower. They had five children before she died on 28 December 1838. He never remarried. He served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1842 to 1852 and was a delegate to Republican National Convention from Illinois, 1860. William Percival Pickering (25 October 1819 – 16 August 1905) was an English first-class cricketer with amateur status. He was one of the founders of Surrey County Cricket Club in 1845 and later, having emigrated to Canada, played a significant role in the beginnings of international cricket especially through his proposal to fund an English tour of North America. Pickering is recorded in 29 matches from 1840 to 1848 which are designated first-class by ''CricketArchive'', totalling 445 runs at the low average of 9.67 with a highest score of 51 not out, holding 17 catches and taking 7 wickets. William Pickering (1894 – 9 November 1917) was a Scottish professional footballer who played in the Football League for Burnley as a centre forward. He also played in the Scottish League for Morton. Personal life In 1915, during the second year of the First World War, Pickering enlisted as a private in the Seaforth Highlanders. Pickering's battalion saw action in the Mesopotamian campaign and he was shot through the head and killed during the Capture of Tikrit on 9 November 1917. William Pickering (2 April 1796 – 27 April 1854) was an English publisher and bookseller, notable for various innovations in publishing. He is sometimes credited with introducing edition binding in cloth to British publishing. Life and career Pickering served an apprentice in the booktrade between 1810 and 1817, then worked for several booksellers before establishing his own business as an antiquarian bookseller and publisher in 1820. In the same year he began publishing a series of "Diamond Classics", miniature books set in tiny type that were offered in a uniform binding of paper (later cloth) or leather. These are often said to be the first publishers' bindings in cloth, but it is likely that Pickering was one among several publishers who began binding their books in cloth at this period, an innovation which owed its origins to the bookbinder Archibald Leighton, and had a rapid and profound impact on the publishing industry. William Hayward Pickering (24 December 1910 – 15 March 2004) was a New Zealand-born aerospace engineer who headed Pasadena, California's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for 22 years, retiring in 1976. He was a senior NASA luminary and pioneered the exploration of space. Pickering was also a founding member of the United States National Academy of Engineering.
