Whitby Abbey
Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church was situated overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire, England, a centre of the medieval Northumbrian kingdom. The abbey and its possessions were confiscated by the crown under Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries between 1536 and 1545. Since that time, the ruins of the abbey have continued to be used by sailors as a landmark at the headland. Since the 20th century, the substantial ruins of the church have been declared a Grade I Listed building and are in the care of English Heritage; the site museum is housed in Cholmley House. Sussex (UK Parliament Constituency)
Sussex was a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of England then of the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1800 and of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1832. It was represented by two Knights of the Shire, elected by the bloc vote system. Under the Reform Act 1832 the constituency was split into two two-member divisions, for Parliamentary purposes, at the 1832 general election. The county was then represented by the East Sussex and West Sussex divisions. Boundaries The constituency comprised the whole historic county of Sussex. Sussex contained nine boroughs: Arundel, Bramber, Chichester, East Grinstead, Horsham, Lewes, Midhurst, New Shoreham and Steyning; and four Cinque Ports: Hastings, Rye, Seaford and Winchelsea. William Percy (bishop)
William Percy (7 April 1428 at Alnwick Castle – 26 April 1462) was a late medieval Bishop of Carlisle. He was the fifth son of Henry Percy, 2nd Earl of Northumberland, and his wife Lady Eleanor Neville. Percy was in 1451 appointed to be Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, a post he held until 1456. He was selected 30 August 1452 to be Bishop of Carlisle following the appointment of his predecessor Nicholas Close to the Bishopric of Coventry and Lichfield. William Percy (1574–1648), English poet and playwright, was the third son of Henry Percy, 8th Earl of Northumberland (c.1532–1585), and his wife Katharine Neville (1545/6–1596). His elder brother Henry was a significant figure in English cultural and scientific circles in the late 16th - early 17th century. Birth and early life Percy's date of birth is a matter of some uncertainty. The year 1574 has accepted by many on the evidence of the entry for Percy’s matriculation at Oxford, which identifies him as being fifteen years old on June 13, 1589. However, Bishop Thomas Percy records that he was born at Beamish on 29 June 1570. William Percy (portrait Artist)
William Percy (1820–1903) was a portrait artist of Manchester, England. He was born in Chorlton-on-Medlock in 1820. His love of art began early in his life: his first picture was exhibited at the Manchester Autumn Festival in 1833. In 1836 he went to London to become a pupil and assistant of William Bradley. He returned to Manchester early in 1839 where he established a first class reputation as a portrait painter. Percy was a founder of the Manchester Academy of Art in 1845. As he wrote later: First - to institute a class for the study of the antique and the living model - the want of which has been long felt by the students and artists of this town as an insuperable bar to professional advancement. The Honourable William Henry Percy (24 March 1788 – 5 October 1855) was a British Royal Navy officer and politician. Family Percy was the sixth son of Algernon Percy, 1st Earl of Beverley, and his wife, the former Isabella Susannah Burrell, daughter of Peter Burrell. Naval and political career Entering the navy as a first-class volunteer on board the 64 gun in May 1801 and going with it to China, Percy returned in November 1802 and was posted to as a midshipman. William Alexander Percy (May 10, 1834 – January 19, 1888) was an American lawyer, planter, and Democratic politician. He was the Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1878 to 1880 and the father of U.S. senator LeRoy Percy. Early life William Alexander Percy was born on May 10, 1834, in Huntsville, Alabama. He was the son of Thomas George Percy (1786–1841) and his wife, Maria (Pope) Percy. After his father's death in 1841, Percy moved along with his widowed mother and his brothers John Walker and Leroy to Washington County, Mississippi, where they reclaimed a tract of land which Percy's father had owned. William Alexander Percy
William Alexander Percy (May 14, 1885 – January 21, 1942), was a lawyer, planter, and poet from Greenville, Mississippi. His autobiography ''Lanterns on the Levee'' (Knopf 1941) became a bestseller. His father LeRoy Percy was the last United States Senator from Mississippi elected by the legislature. In a largely Protestant state, the younger Percy championed the Roman Catholicism of his French mother. William Armstrong Percy III (December 10, 1933 – October 30, 2022) was an American professor, historian, encyclopedist, and gay activist. He taught from 1968 at the University of Massachusetts Boston, and started publishing in gay studies in 1985. Early life and education Bill was born to Anne Minor Dent and William Armstrong Percy, II, of the Mississippi Percy family. His mother was raised by her widowed uncle, the distinguished Memphis lawyer Dent Minor. He was a descendant of 17th-century Dent settlers in Maryland and the Minors in Virginia. William Percy Carpmael
William Percy Carpmael (20 May 1864 – 27 December 1936) was the founder and first president of the rugby union Barbarian Football Club. Carpmael was born the eldest of eight in Briscobel, Streatham in England.Starmer-Smith (1977), pg 13. Education and early career Carpmael was educated at Christ's College, Finchley where he was a boarder, and later at Jesus College, Cambridge. On completing university he joined his father's firm of patent agents; Carpmaels and Ransford of Chancery Lane. He would eventually become senior partner of the firm.
