William Paxton (British Businessman)
Sir William Paxton (1744−1824) was a Scottish-born sailor, a businessman and the Welsh Member of Parliament for Carmarthen. He was instrumental in developing Tenby into a seaside resort. Early life Paxton's family originated from Auchencrow near to Paxton, Berwickshire. He was the son of John Paxton, chief clerk to Scottish wine merchant Archibald Stewart, who had become Lord Provost of Edinburgh. In 1745, when Charles Edward Stuart, "Bonnie Prince Charlie", marched down from Caledonian with his army of Highlanders to make his bid for the throne, Stewart feebly opposed him. Arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London from where, after six weeks, he was released on a bail of £15,000. Two years later, he was found "not guilty" but Stewart found his name sullied in the eyes of the Edinburgh public and decided to transfer home and business to London. William Paxton (Australian Businessman)
William Paxton (1818 – 1 September 1893) was a South Australian colonist who arrived in the Province of South Australia in 1840, became one of the investors in the Burra copper mines and returned to England in July 1855, as a wealthy man. Early life Some sources give his birthplace as Whitby, Cheshire, or Whitby, Yorkshire but he was christened on 22 February 1819 in Claydon, Oxfordshire, a long way from either, and was a resident of Brighton, Sussex, before leaving for Australia, and was a pharmacist by training. Pharmacy He arrived in Adelaide on 11 August 1840 on the barque ''Lalla Rookh''. In November 1840 he took over W. E. Bayldon's chemist shop "Apothecaries' Hall" at the west end of Hindley Street. He was joined by Dr. L. Moore, who had been the surgeon on the "Lalla Rookh". William Paxton (1737–1781) was an English composer and cellist. He composed several sets of duets and solos for the cello, including six duos for two cellos (Op. 1), eight duos for violin and cello (Op. 2), six solos for violin (Op. 3), four solos for violin and two for the cello (Op. 4), twelve easy lessons for cello (Op. 6). and six solos for cello (Op. 8). William McGregor Paxton (June 22, 1869 – 1941) was an American painter and instructor who embraced the Boston School paradigm and was a co-founder of The Guild of Boston Artists. He taught briefly while a student at Cowles Art School, where he met his wife Elizabeth Okie Paxton, and at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston. Paxton is known for his portraits, including those of two presidents—Grover Cleveland and Calvin Coolidge—and interior scenes with women, including his wife. He is one of the founders of Adobe Systems and became one of the original designers and implementors of the PostScript page description language. In 2021, Paxton was awarded the Beatrice M. Tinsley Prize for developing the MESA software for computational stellar astrophysics. Stanford Paxton received his PhD from Stanford in 1977.
