William Paulus
William Paulus is an American former competition swimmer and world record-holder. In 1980, he qualified for the U.S. Olympic team; however, he did not attend the Olympics due to the United States-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Paulus' times from the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials would have won two gold medals at the 1980 Olympics. He held the 100-meter butterfly world record from 1981 to 1983. Paulus grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, and went to college at the University of Texas on a swimming scholarship in the early 1980s. While at Texas, he earned All-American honors from 1980 to 1983. He was a five-time Southwest Conference champion in the 50-yard butterfly (1982, 1983); 100-yard butterfly (1980, 1983), and 200-yard butterfly (1980); and was part of Texas's NCAA champion 4x100-yard medley relay teams in 1981 and 1982. Butterfly Swimming
The butterfly (colloquially shortened to fly) is a swimming stroke swum on the chest, with both arms moving symmetrically, accompanied by the butterfly kick (also known as the "dolphin kick"). While other styles like the breaststroke, front crawl, or backstroke can be swum adequately by beginners, the butterfly is a more difficult stroke that requires good technique as well as strong muscles. It is the newest swimming style swum in competition, first swum in 1933 and originating out of the breaststroke. Speed and ergonomics The peak speed of the butterfly is faster than that of the front crawl due to the synchronous pull/push with both arms and legs, which is done quickly. Yet since speed drops significantly during the recovery phase, it is overall slightly slower than front crawl, especially over longer distances. The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad". Pär Arvidsson (born 27 February 1960 in Finspång) is a former butterfly swimmer from Sweden. He won the 100 m butterfly at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, after having set the world record in the same event a couple of months earlier in Austin, Texas. He held the record until April 1981.
