William Patterson (New York Politician)
William Patterson (June 4, 1789 – August 14, 1838) was an American farmer, manufacturer and politician. He served as a United States representative from the U.S. state of New York. Early life Patterson was born in Londonderry, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Wallace) Patterson. He attended the common schools and moved to Rensselaerville, Albany County, New York in 1815. The following year Patterson moved to Lyons, Wayne County where he engaged in the manufacture and sale of fanning mills. In 1822, he moved to a farm near Warsaw, New York and engaged in agricultural pursuits, and then settled in Warsaw in 1837. Political career Patterson held several local offices in Warsaw, and was elected as a Whig candidate to the Twenty-fifth Congress. William "Spaceman" Patterson is a guitarist and producer, who has collaborated with Miles Davis, James Brown and Frank Ocean. William Burns Paterson was an educator and horticulturist. He is chiefly known as an educational provider, being involved in establishing Alabama State University. He was a Democrat, a Presbyterian, and a charter member of the Alabama State horticultural society. Early life William was born today (some sources 1849), at Tullibody, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, son of John and Janet (Burns) Paterson, of Tullibody. His father was a Balman (sometimes called a "ball man" or "pot still man") to trade at Glenochil Distillery. He is also recorded as having worked as a gardener at Tullibody House. William Patterson (1752–1835) was a businessman, a gun-runner during the American Revolution, and a founder of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. His many business dealings included shipping, banking, and the Baltimore Water Company. Early life and career Patterson was born in 1752 in Fanad, County Donegal, Ireland. He moved to Philadelphia as a penniless fourteen-year-old and set about making his fortune through grim determination and risk-taking. By making connections with older businessmen and merchants, he was able to buy two shares in ships transporting guns from Europe to the Americas. Patterson went along on the voyage. When the ships docked in the West Indies, he left the ship and saw a golden opportunity to roll his money into being a middleman by investing in warehouses where goods were stored before being shipped north to America.
