William Offield
In 1821, William Offield built a cabin on a creek, (later known as Offield's Creek), four miles southwest of the future site of Crawfordsville, Indiana in an area now known as Balhinch. He and William Miller were the first two settlers in the area. William Offield was born 24 Mar 1793 in Sullivan County, Tennessee Sullivan County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee on its northeast border. Crawfordsville is a city in Montgomery County in west central Indiana, United States, west by northwest of Indianapolis. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 16,306. The city is the county seat of Montgomery County, the only chartered city and largest populated place in the county. Balhinch is two-mile-square unincorporated community in Union Township, Montgomery County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. Balhinch includes Rattlesnake Canyon and Weir Cemetery. History The Balhinch area was originally settled by William Offield in February 1821, five miles southwest of Crawfordsville in Section 21 in an area with two streams — Sugar Creek and Rattlesnake Creek.
