William O. Gallery
Rear Admiral William Onahan Gallery (22 June 1904 – 15 November 1981) was a United States Navy admiral — one of three brothers who became United States Navy admirals. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he was a naval aviator who served with distinction in combat during World War II. Biography William Onahan Gallery was born on 22 June 1904 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Daniel Vincent Gallery (born Chicago, July 19, 1865), lawyer, and Mary Onahan Gallery, writer. Gallery entered the United States Naval Academy in 1921, the second of three brothers who would graduate from the Naval Academy. He received his commission as a United States Navy ensign in 1925. He served aboard the battleship from 1925 to 1927, followed by duty aboard from 1927 to 1930. In 1930, Gallery reported for flight training in Pensacola, Florida. Ensign (; Late Middle English, from Old French (), from Latin (plural)) is a junior rank of a commissioned officer in the armed forces of some countries, normally in the infantry or navy. As the junior officer in an infantry regiment was traditionally the carrier of the ensign flag, the rank acquired the name. This rank has generally been replaced in army ranks by second lieutenant. Eglin Air Force Base is a United States Air Force (USAF) base in the western Florida Panhandle, located about southwest of Valparaiso in Okaloosa County. Naval Air Station Alameda (NAS Alameda) was a United States Navy Naval Air Station in Alameda, California, on San Francisco Bay. NAS Alameda had two runways: 13–31 measuring and 07-25 measuring .
